How It Happened
Set One:
With the score tied 7-7, WBU went on an 11-2 run, which featured five kills from Tatijana Markic, for an 18-9 lead.
Kalli Dalland and
Hannah Froeschl ended the sequence with a block, which started a 5-0 LCU run to cut the deficit to 18-14. The Pioneers countered by scoring three of the next four points and closing the set on a 4-1 advantage to win the set 25-18. Markic had six kills in two blocks in the set for WBU. Dalland,
Sage Chain and
Jenna Lyons co-led LCU in the set with three kills each.
Set Two:
The Lady Chaps responded with a strong second set. Trailing 3-1, LCU went on a 15-3 run, which included a 6-0 run, for a 16-6 lead. LCU went on to win the set 25-15, hitting .438 in the frame. Froeschl (4) and Chain (4) combined for eight kills and were two of seven different Lady Chaps to produce a kill in the set, as LCU had a 17-9 advantage in kills (in the set).
Set Three:
Riding the momentum from the second set, LCU opened the third set with a 4-0 run. Wayland was able to come back to cut LCU's lead to 5-4 before LCU eventually rebuilt the lead to 12-6 off a 5-0 run. Just as it appeared LCU was going to go on the same roll as the prior set, the Pioneers responded with a 7-2 run to cut LCU's lead to 14-13. WBU would also use a 5-1 run to tie the set at 18-18, but LCU never trailed in the set. A kill by Chain led to a 4-0 LCU run, and a run they needed to eventually claim the set 25-21. For a second consecutive set, LCU had 17 kills, with Genenbacher assisting on 16 of the kills. Froeschl led LCU with four kills in the set.
Set Four:
LCU fell behind 3-1 to open the fourth set, but a kill by
Kaitlyn Mayo sparked a 5-1 LCU surge to take a 5-4 lead.
Chloe Menard and Froeschl (2) combined for three aces in the scoring span. Three consecutive LCU points coming off kills from Mayo led to LCU leading 15-11, but WBU marched back with a 4-1 run to trim LCU's lead to 16-15.
Sage Post had a pair of kills to help LCU go on a 6-2 run, which was capped by another ace from Menard, providing LCU a 22-17 lead. The teams traded points before a kill by Chain clinched the match with a 25-21 set win. Mayo had six kills in the set, helping LCU to 16 kills and a .316 attack percentage in the set.
