WELCOME HOME
After playing the opening five games of the 2021-22 season, No.1 (WBCA) Lubbock Christian University returns home to the Lubbock and to Rip Griffin Center, where they open their home slate as hosts to the Lady Chaps Invitational. LCU plays two nationally ranked programs, hosting No.1 (D2SIDA) Lander Friday at 7 p.m. and No.20 Daemen Saturday at 8 p.m. Both Lander and Daemen joined LCU in the field of the 2021 NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Columbus, Ohio.
 
CHAP NOTES
  • > Ashton Duncan leads LCU with 16 three-pointers, averaging 3.2 per game. The 16 three-pointers leads the nation. Duncan, who has scored at least 10 points in all five games this season, is leading LCU averaging 14.8 points per game.
  • > Allie Schulte claimed the first Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season (the season-opening weekly awards by the LSC included all games played and not just the ones played during the week). Schulte led LCU to a 4-1 start, as they went 3-0 at the DII CCA Tip-Off Classic at the Trailhead in Billings, Montana and 1-1 at the RMAC/LSC Tip-Off Challenge in Lakewood, Colo. She averaged 12.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.6 steals a game. She claimed All-Tournament MVP honors at the DII CCA Tip-Off Classic at the Trailhead, which included a season-opening 19 points against Montevallo. At Colorado Christian, Schulte had a season-high five steals and has 13 steals through five games played. The guard from Nazareth, Texas produced double figures in points in four of the five games played.
  • > Laynee Burr, who has two performances of at least 18 points this season, is averaging 10.8 points per game to give LCU three players averaging double figures in scoring. A member of the DII CCA Tip-Off Classic at the Trailhead All-Tournament Team selection, Burr is 31st nationally in steals (9) and 51st in assists with 14 on the season (2.8 per game).
  • > LCU games this season have not included hot shooting from the start from either team. The Lady Chaps are averaging a start of 3:17 (three minutes and 17 seconds) until making their first field goal. Their opponents have opened games with an average of going 2:38 into the game until scoring the first field goal.
  • > LCU opened the season making their first 14 free-throw attempts and are 82.7% (62/75) from the free-throw line, which ranks 14th nationally. From their game against Tampa to their game at CCU, in which they made 13 consecutive free-throws to start the game, LCU made a sequence of 17 consecutive free-throws. LCU heads into the game against Lander with eight consecutive made free-throws. Schulte is 19-of-20 (95.0%), ranking second nationally in the category.
  • > Grace Foster has been an impactful true freshman, leading the team in blocks (3) and averaging 3.8 rebounds per game. Foster is averaging 7.3 points a game over the prior three games, which includes a 10-point performance over Tampa for her first career double-digit outing.
  • > LCU is averaging 8.8 steals (seventh nationally) per game and has a 44-25 advantage over their opponents in the category. Schulte leads the team and the nation with 13, ranking eighth in steals per game (2.6).
EYE-OPENING
The 2021-22 season marks LCU's ninth since leaving the NAIA, and heading into this week's action, LCU is 218-30 in that span (87.9%). In NCAA postseason play, the Lady Chaps are 20-1 all-time.

OPEN HOUSE
The Lady Chaps have won their home openers the prior nine seasons. Their last home opening loss was a 61-44 loss to Metro State on Nov. 5, 2011. LCU is 17-1 all-time in home openers under Steve Gomez. Last season, LCU opened the home schedule with an 88-52 win over St. Mary's.
 
NATIONALLY KNOWN
For the first time in program history, LCU claimed the No.1 spot in the WBCA's National Top-25 Preseason Poll, and for the first time they were the favorites in both the WBCA and D2SIDA preseason polls. With LCU falling Saturday to CSU Pueblo, which ended their 39-game win streak, LCU fell to No.10 in the D2SIDA Top-25 Poll. The WBCA has not released an in-season ranking yet, so LCU remains No.1 in the WBCA poll.
 
SO ARE SOME OTHERS
LCU is facing two nationally ranked opponents this week (No.1 Lander and No.20 Daemen). LCU went 6-0 against nationally ranked programs last season and 4-2 in 2019-20 against the nations ranked foes. This season, LCU is 1-0 against ranked opponents, as they defeated No.11 Tampa 56-44 in Billings, Mont. (Nov. 7).

SWEET HOME (ON) CHICAGO
LCU went 13-0 last season inside Rip Griffin Center. The Lady Chaps, who wrapped up home play with the LSC Championships and becoming the first team since 2007 to win the LSC Championship tournament on a campus venue, went 13-0 last season at home and with their active home win streak sitting at 91 games, which is the active and all-time leading mark in NCAA Division II women's basketball. LCU's last home loss came on Jan. 1, 2015 against Oklahoma City University. LCU, who also has a 7-0 mark in NCAA postseason play in Lubbock in the mix (not including a 3-0 mark in LSC postseason play), has also won 74 consecutive home conference games, with their last conference home loss occurring Jan. 10, 2013 (against Oklahoma City). They completed a 49-0 all-time mark in Heartland Conference home games (they are 21-0 in LSC home games).

FIVE THINGS ABOUT LANDER
1 > The Bearcats are coming off a 20-2 campaign in 2020-21, sweeping through with a 14-0 conference record in the Peach Belt Conference. Their season came to an end in the semifinals of the Elite Eight, falling 74-65 to Drury in Columbus, Ohio.
2 > The D2SIDA has Lander nationally ranked No.1 in their first in-season ranking, while the WBCA has ander No.3 in their Preseason Poll.
3 > Makaila Cangé claimed Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week for week number one; the conference office announced Monday afternoon.  Makaila scored 20 points while pulling down 10 rebounds to help lead Lander to an 84-72 win over No. 21 Carson-Newman. She followed with a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double in the Bearcats 67-55 win over Lenoir-Rhyne. On the week, she averaged 25.5 points and 10 rebounds. Her scoring average ranks fifth in Division II.
4 > Lander is averaging 34 points per game in paint-scoring.
5 > The Bearcats rank fifth nationally in three-point shooting percentage with a mark of 48.3%.
 
THE SERIES AGAINST LANDER
LCU and Lander are meeting for the first time. They will serve as the first South Carolina based opponent LCU has ever faced.
