Strong Second Half Leads Chaps Past Aggies

LCU Wins 10th Straight

LUBBOCK, Texas (December 14, 2021) – It was only a seven-point game at halftime, but Lubbock Christian University outscored Cameron 44-24 in the final 20 minutes of play to cruise to an 87-60 win on Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Chaps moved to 10-0 with another strong defensive effort, holding the Aggies (2-4) to 35.6 percent shooting. Only two Cameron players reached double-figures, and Colt Savage, who was leading the team with an average of 17 points per game, was held to just seven by LCU.

Meanwhile, five Lubbock Christian players hit the double-digit scoring mark. Lloyd Daniels led the way with 22 points on an efficient 8-13 shooting, including 4-5 from behind the arc. Parker Hicks had 19 and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year. Zach Stepp scored 14, with 12 of those coming from behind the arc, while Rowan Mackenzie and Jalen Brattain each had 10.

It was not a wire-to-wire win for the Chaps, as Cameron hit an and-one layup on the first possession of the game. They did not lead for long though, as a layup from Mackenzie sparked a quick 8-0 run by LCU and put them ahead for good.

Lubbock Christian's lead reached the double-digit mark near the end of the second half and even stretched all the way out to 16 on a Daniels three-pointer at the 4:13 mark, but Cameron ended the half on a 16-7 run to remain in contention at halftime.

The 44 points scored by the Chaps in the second half were only one more than they scored in the first 20 minutes, but it was more than enough to run away with the game. Cameron kept it close up to the first media timeout. What followed was a 14-2 run by the Chaps over the next six minutes, and then another 9-2 run after that.

In all, Cameron made just seven shots from the field during the second half, and two of those came in the final two minutes after LCU had subbed out all of its starters. Aaron Gonzales got the lead to its widest point of the game with only 1:28 left to play, hitting a corner three to put the Chaps up by 32. The Aggies scored their two garbage time baskets before the final horn sounded.

TURNING POINT
From the 15:38 mark until the 6:19 mark of the second half, Lubbock Christian out-scored Cameron 23-4, taking a commanding lead and putting the game out of reach down the stretch.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
LCU shot 47.8 percent from behind the arc, which was their second-best performance of the season. It was also their second-straight game shooting better than 45 percent on three-pointers, which they had not previously done in back-to-back games this season. The Chaps are now shooting 39.1 percent from behind the arc overall, which is the third-best mark in the Lone Star Conference.

NEXT UP
The Chaps will wrap up non-conference play this weekend with a trip to Las Vegas, where they will take part in the Holiday Hoops Classic. Lubbock Christian is slated to face Rollins College on Friday and Western Washington on Saturday.
