LUBBOCK, Texas (February 24, 2021) – Lubbock Christian scored one goal early and one goal late and they needed both of them to take down UT Permian Basin 2-1 Wednesday nights at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
The win was the Lady Chaps' first in a season-opener since 2017 when they also took down UT Permian Basin, that time by a score of 4-0.
It did not take long for LCU to get the offense going, as they earned a pair of corner kicks and had shots from
Allison Scott and
Makenna Pate in the first six minutes of action. They broke through for the game's opening goal in the 14
th minute, capitalizing on a free kick as Scott found the back of the net.
The goal was the 21
st of Scott's career after she scored a career-high 11 during the 2019 season. Assists on the goal went to
Victoria Ramirez, who took the free kick, and
Maddie Hoel. It was the seventh assist of Ramirez's career and the fourth for Hoel.
Lubbock Christian continued to control the game and keep the ball in their offensive half of the field for most of the first half. The Falcons only took on shot all half, and it missed left. They only earned a pair of corner kicks as well, while LCU went into half time having already earned seven.
After the halftime break though, UTPB came out firing, earning a corner kick and taking a shot in the first three minutes of play. They finally broke through in the 56
th minute, taking advantage of a free kick of their own to even things up at 1-1.
With the score knotted up, the Lady Chaps and Falcons traded scoring chances. Marlise Bond put another shot on goal in the 69
th minute for the Falcons while Scott and
Celia Duarte had solid scoring attempts in the 66
th and 74
th minutes respectively. All three were saved.
Duarte's shot, however, was just pushed out of bounds by the Falcon goalkeeper, setting up a corner kick for LCU. They capitalized, as the cross found
Faith Webber, who struck it into the back of the net for her first goal in an LCU uniform.
The Lady Chaps held onto the one-goal lead for the final 15 minutes, securing their season-opening win.
Lubbock Christian will face a quick turnaround now, as they travel to take on Angelo State at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the ASU Soccer Field.
