Lady Chaps Split Conference Tune-up Against Central Oklahoma

LCU Has Nine-Game Win Streak Snapped As They Face Conference Compeition This Upcoming Week

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 27, 2021) – No.24 Lubbock Christian University had four players combine for three runs-batted-in on the day, as the Lady Chaps split a doubleheader with Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at a windy PlainsCapital Park. LCU hit a trio of home runs in the opener en route to an 8-0 run-ruled shortened victory (five innings) before the Bronchos jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held for an 8-6 win to end LCU's nine-game win streak.

Game 1

LCU Highlights:

Turning Point:
Brooke Makemson bashed a two-run home run in the first inning to set the tone for LCU, as the Lady Chaps ended up with a three-run first inning.

How it Happened:
  • LCU jumped on UCO starting pitcher Kylee Lynch early, with a three-run first inning, highlighted by a Makemson home run. Skylar Herrera added to the lead in the second inning with a RBI-double, which led to a pitching change with Lynch allowing six runs off six hits to 11 batters faced in 1.0 innings.  
  • Donaldson capped the three-run second inning with a two-run double for a 6-0 lead.
  • In the fourth inning, Donaldson hit a solo home run for a 7-0 LCU lead.
  • Taylor Franco faced a minor jam in the fifth inning, allowing a pair of runners on base, but LCU was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run. Tyla Lee was able to come up in the home half of the eighth inning and hit a solo home run to end the game via the run-rule.  
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • LCU was 6-for-13 (.462) with runners on base, with six different Lady Chaps having a hit with a runners on base.
  • Taylor Franco improved to 6-1 on the season, recording her sixth complete game and fifth complete game shutout. She improved to 44.1 innings pitched without allowing an earned run (to start the season). Franco also pitched a scoreless inning in relief in the second game to extend the mark to 45.1 innings.
  • Makemson's home run was her team-leading fifth of the season and seventh of her LCU career. Donaldson also hit her seventh home run of her LCU career, hitting her second of the 2021 campaign. Lee's dinger was her first home run of her LCU career.
  • Franco did not allow a walk, marking her sixth game this season in which she did not allow a walk.
 
Game 2

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
UCO collected four runs, all with two outs, in the second inning, which led to UCO leading 5-0.

How it Happened:
  • An infield pop-up was dropped with two outs, prolonging the inning and allowing UCO's Hazel Puempel and Lexy Dobson to single, which led to a 1-0 lead.
  • Taylor McKittrick (double) and Puempel (single) each drove in a pair of runs with two outs to build the lead to 5-0 for the Bronchos.
  • Muniz doubled in Addi Lewis for LCU's first run in the second inning. They followed with three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Herrera to cut UCO's lead to 5-4.
  • Jacee Minter homered to left field, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning to push UCO's lead to 7-4.
  • LCU had a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Makemson and Lewis each hit two-out doubles and they led to a pair of runs to get within 7-6.
  • An error led to an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning for the Bronchos. LCU tried to answer in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they stranded the tying runs (stranded two) on base.  

Inside the Numbers:
  • Herrera's home run was her fourth home run and eighth of her career.
  • The Lady Chaps went through three different pitchers in the game, with Maxine Valdez (0-2) taking the loss. Valdez and Dakota Stotyn each allowed five hits in in 3.0 innings.
  • Corrina Rivas (3-0) was the winning pitcher despite issuing nine walks and no strikeouts.
  • The meetings were the first ever meetings between the two teams. The games also marked UCO's first true road games since April of 2019.

Up Next:
LCU remains home this upcoming weekend and will host Oklahoma Christian for their first LSC series of the season.
