LAREDO, Texas (March 16, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University scored just one goal on Tuesday, but it was all they needed to take down Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Soccer Field.
The win was LCU's second-straight and their fourth of the season against just one loss. It was also the 32
nd win of head coach
Paul Gilbert's tenure (2016-Present), which moved him past Kyle Beard (2010-12) to become the winningest coach in program history.
With three points added to their total for the win, the Chaparrals now have nine this season, putting them in a tie for second in the conference with St. Mary's, who is their next opponent.
Lubbock Christian got on the attack quickly and earned two corner kicks in the first two minutes of play, but it was Texas A&M International that actually had the first shot on goal. Kristian Colaci had the scoring chance in the fourth minute, but
Braxton Thorne made the save. TAMIU would not have another shot on goal for the entire rest of the half.
The Chaps quickly responded, as
Tariq Bakkali put a shot on goal less than a minute later, but TAMIU goalkeeper Natxo Faus stopped it. The shot was Bakkali's fourth on goal this year (second-most on the team), but he has yet to find the back of the net. Hector-Rodriguez Cabo put a second LCU shot on goal in the 17
th minute, but it was again saved, and the two teams stayed knotted up at 0-0.
In the 33
rd minute, Lubbock Christian made a sub, bringing on
Pablo Galietero Diez for
Juan Jose Valdez Lopez. Diez made an impact quickly, breaking the scoreless tie in the 39
th minute with a rocket to the upper right corner of the goal.
The goal was the first of the season for Diez, who last scored on Nov. 7 against West Texas A&M.
Jonathan Woods assisted on the goal, collecting his third point of the year.
TAMIU attempted one more shot before halftime, but it missed out right and LCU took a lead into the break.
The Chaps did not have a shot on goal in the final 45 minutes, although Bakkali,
Fernando Flores and Diez did have shot attempts. They did lock in defensively though, allowing just two shots on goal from the Dustdevils. Both were saved by Thorne, preserving LCU's third shutout of the year.
Lubbock Christian will be at home for its next match, hosting St. Mary's on March 23 at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
