LUBBOCK, Texas (March 17, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University netted a pair of first half goals and was locked in defensively, beating St. Edward's 2-0 on Tuesday night at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
The win moved the Lady Chaps to 4-2 this year and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference action. It was also the first win ever for LCU over SEU in 13 total meetings.
Taking on a Hilltopper team that has struggled offensively, Lubbock Christian went on the attack early.
Victoria Ramirez took the first LCU shot on goal in just the eighth minute, but the SEU keeper made a save.
Just 10 minutes later, the Lady Chaps went on top.
Stephanie McClung sent a perfect pass through to a streaking
Celia Duarte, who shot from the left side of the goal into the bottom right corner to beat the keeper and give LCU the lead.
The goal was Duarte's third this season and gave her points number seven and eight. She leads the team in total points. McClung's assist was her second of the year and gives her three points.
LCU's goal in the 18
th minute marked the fifth time this season that they have scored first in a game, and they are now 4-1 in those contests.
SEU had their first two shot attempts shortly after the Duarte goal, but both missed wide. Then in the 31
st minute,
Allison Scott had just moved into the 18-yard box as she received a through ball when she was brought to the ground by a foul from an SEU defender.
Scott took the ensuing penalty kick herself, shooting low and to the right and finding the back of the net for her third goal of the season and the 23
rd of her LCU career.
St. Edward's finally got its first shot on goal in the 27
th minute and it was a good one, but goalkeeper
Hannah Wise touched it with her outstretched fingers, and it bounced off the crossbar. The Hilltoppers had another strong scoring attempt in the 43
rd minute, but Wise again made the save and LCU led 2-0 at halftime.
The score would stay right there for the entire second half, though not for lack of trying by either team. LCU had three more shots on goal from
Makenna Pate, Duarte and Ramirez, while SEU put shots on goal in the 46
th and 77
th minutes. All five shots were stopped though, and the Lady Chaps clinched their third-straight win.
It is also the third straight shutout for Lubbock Christian, which has not allowed a goal in the last 284 minutes and 19 seconds of play overall. The last time LCU had three shut outs in a row was from Sept. 30 to Oct. 14, 2017, when they went four straight games without allowing a goal in Heartland Conference action.
The Lady Chaps will now look towards their final road trip of the spring 2021 season, as they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on Texas A&M International at 7 p.m. on March 24 at Dustdevil Soccer Field.
