ABILENE, Texas (March 7, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University earned its first shutout of the 2021 spring season, taking down McMurry 3-0 at Wilford Moore Stadium on Saturday.
Goals in the game came from three different Lady Chap players as they moved to 2-2 on the season and stopped a two-game losing streak.
LCU's offense was in attack mode from the start, earning two corner kicks and getting a shot from
Stephanie McClung in the first 10 minutes of play. They broke through in the 11
th minute, as
Celia Duarte scored on an assist from
Allison Scott.
The goal was the second of the season for Duarte, which leads the team. She also has a team-leading six points. It was also the ninth goal and 28
th point of her career. Scott's assist was her first this year and the 14
th of her Lubbock Christian career.
The Lady Chaps were unable to get a second goal in the first half, but not for lack of trying. They earned three more corner kicks for five total in the first 45 minutes. Duarte took another shot that was blocked in the 20
th minute, and
Julie Shahi put a shot on goal that was saved in the 41
st minute, but the score was still 1-0 at the break.
McMurry did have a few scoring opportunities in the first half, putting shots on goal in the 25
th, 27
th and 39
th minutes, but all were saved by Lady Chap goalkeeper
Hannah Wise. The senior had four saves overall, posting her first shutout of the year.
Scott put a shot on goal four minutes into the second half and had it saved, but five minutes later LCU was able to double their lead with a goal from
Stephanie McClung, who found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career. The freshman's goal was assisted by
Victoria Ramirez, who tallied her first point this season and the seventh helper of her career.
Duarte really pushed for a second goal, taking another shot on goalin the 70
th minute and one in the 83
rd minute but getting stopped both times.
The game was already well in hand by the time the Lady Chaps scored their third and final goal, but it was still a meaningful one. The shot that found the back of the net was from
Makenna Pate, who scored in an actual game for the first time since Oct. 25, 2018. Pate was injured prior to the start of the 2019 season and had to sit out her sophomore season. She did have eight goals as a freshman, making Sunday's the ninth of her LCU career.
Assisting on Pate's goal was
Maddie Hoel, who got her second of the season and fifth of her career.
Lubbock Christian will be on the road for their next game too, as they travel to Odessa to take on UT Permian Basin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Falcon Field.
