Match vs. Washburn - How It Happened
Set One:
LCU was ready at the start of the set, as
Jalee Sims opened the match with an ace and LCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Lady Chaps led 8-5 before Washburn flexed their muscle and went on a 13-3 run. The Ichabods took the opening set 25-15 behind a .350 hitting percentage. Washburn was versatile with their attacks, as six different Ichabods had at least two kills in the set, but no player had more than three kills. LCU was led by three kills from
Sage Chain. Washburn capitalized with four aces in the set.
Set Two:
The Lady Chaps had a similar start in the second set, opening with a 5-1 run. Washburn was able to come back and the set was neck-and-neck throughout. WU had thought they had tied the game at 19-19 off an attack error by Chain, but LCU challenged the play and won the challenge resulting in a 20-18 lead. The challenge came up big, as Washburn came back to tie the set at 22-22. LCU called a replay and responded with a kill from
Hannah Froeschl. Taylor Antonowich tied the set at 23-23 with a kill for WU, but LCU prevailed with a pair of kills from
Sage Chain to take the set 25-23. Chain had six kills in the set, which was one off Gray, who led LCU with seven kills in the frame. Each team had 19 kills in the set, as LCU hit .333 in the set. Genna Berg and Kelsey Gordon each had five kills for WU in the set.
Set Three:
The third set proved to be the momentum shifter of the match. The score was tied on 10 occasions during the set. Chain and Gray each had a pair of kills to snap a 21-21 tie and LCU was up 24-21. Unfortunately for LCU, they were unable to survive three set-point serves and Washburn responded with a 5-0 run to claim the set 26-24. LCU had a 20-18 advantage in kills in the set, but WU had a .400 hitting mark (LCU hit .283). Gray led all players with another seven-kill set. Sims supplied LCU with 15 assists in the set.
Set Four:
The Washburn momentum of the third-set finish carried over into the fourth set. A 7-3 run allowed WU to take a 12-7 lead. Following a kill by Gordon to put WU up 14-9, Washburn never led by a margin less than five points. Washburn had 5.0 blocks in the frame to preserve the set and the win. Gray led all players with five kills in the set, hitting .571 in the set.
