Lubbock Christian University split their play in the final day of action at the Mountain Lion Classic, falling to William Jewell 3-1 before overcoming a 2-0 deficit with a 3-2 victory over tournament host Colo. Colorado Springs (UCCS) Saturday night in the Centennial State.
LCU opened with Missouri-based William Jewell.
Sage Post was LCU's lone member with at least 10 kills, as she led all players with 14 kills. She hit .440 and also added an ace and two blocks.
Jalee Sims added a double-double in the losing cause, as she had 28 assists and 17 digs. Sims also added four kills and a block. Samantha Thompson fueled WJC with 36 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.
The Lady Chaps followed facing UCCS in the late match at Gallogly Events Center. LCU overcame a 2-0 deficit and won the match 3-2 behind a career-high 20-kill performance from
Hannah Froeschl. Her performance put a 26-kill performance by UCCS's Lauryn Shockley in the shadows of an LCU comeback victory. LCU not only had 15 kills from
Aaliyah Gray and 10 kills from
Sage Chain add to Froeschl's totals, but they also had a second double-double of the day from Sims, who had 46 assists and 14 digs. Gray had 10 digs as well for her second double-double of the season.
Kendall Mahaney led LCU with 20 digs in the win.
Gray was LCU's lone All-Tournament Team selection, as she had 48 kills in the four matches in Colorado, at a pace of 3.43 kills per set. She also had 2.07 digs per set.
Match vs. William Jewell - How It Happened
Set One:
The opening set was tightly played, with WJC surging late to win the set 25-23. LCU fell in the set despite an 18-12 advantage in kills, as
Kaitlyn Mayo and
Hannah Froeschl each had four kills to lead LCU in the frame. Lily Johnson, who finished with 11 kills, had four in the set for WJC. Haidan Baade had two of four Cardinal aces in the set.
Set Two:
LCU, coming off a .500 hitting mark in the opening set, jumped out early in the second set. They maintained the lead and used a 16-9 advantage in kills to win the set 25-17. Post had seven kills in nine attempts, as a solid go-to in the set for LCU. The rest of the Lady Chaps combined for nine kills on 29 attempts.
Set Three:
Things went downhill for LCU in the third set. WJC went from hitting .088 in the prior set to .481 in the third set, as LCU hit a low of .030 in the third set. The Cardinals out-killed LCU 15-7, as LCU had seven kills and six attack errors. Bella LaPorta led the way for the Cardinals with five kills in the set.
Set Four:
The final set was not much different, as WJC was able to get an early start and they maintained a cushioned lead throughout. Anna Godfredson had five kills to lead all players in the set for WJC.
Sage Post and Aalyah Gray each had four kills and accounted for eight of LCU's 11 kills in the set.

Match vs. Colo. Colorado Springs - How It Happened
Set One:
LCU jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the match, but then the Mountain Lions responded with an 8-3 run for a 9-4 UCCS lead. They used a 7-1 run later in the set to cruise to a 25-18 set win behind nine kills from Shockley.
Hannah Froeschl and Gray each had four kills for LCU in the set loss. UCCS had one attack error and hit .457 in the set. They had 17 kills, with 16 assisted by Abbie Boren.
Set Two:
It was UCCS opening with a 4-1 lead for the second set. They extended the lead to 7-3 before LCU responded with a 7-3 run, with four of the points coming off UCCS attack errors. LCU had an 18-16 lead, but it slipped away as UCCS went on a 5-0 run driven by a trio of kills from Shockley. The Lady Chaps were able to trim the deficit to 21-20, 23-22 and 24-23, but Hannah Ammerman put the Mountain Lions up 2-0 with a kill for a 25-23 set win. The two squads combined for 17 attack errors in the set (10 by UCCS). Shockley led all players with seven kills in the set.
Set Three:
The 2-0 match deficit sparked LCU in the third set. Leading 12-11, Froeschl produced a kill to jumpstart a 6-0 run to give LCU an 18-11 lead. UCCS pulled within four points of LCU (20-16), but three Mountain Lion mistakes and kills from
Sage Chain and Gray gave LCU 25-16 set win. Shockley was held to two kills on 15 attempts, while Gray (4), Chain (3) and Froeschl (3) combined for 10 kills for LCU, who received 12 assists from Sims.
Set Four:
LCU rolled the momentum into the fourth set, opening on a 5-0 run, which was part of an 11-4 surge to open the set. Froeschl had four kills and an ace in the first eight LCU points scored. The Lady Chaps also had a 10-2 run en route to a 25-12 set win. Froeschl finished the set with seven kills and eight points. UCCS was held to a -.021 attack percentage in the set.
Set Five:
Both teams were hungry for a victory in the final set, as the score was tied seven times in the frame. LCU balanced the attacks and Sims had a pair of key blocks to help LCU go on a 5-1 run for 10-6 lead. UCCS rallied back and a huge replay challenge led to a 4-0 Mountain lion run to tie the set 10-10. The score was tied 11-11 and 12-12 before kills by Froeschl and Gray gave LCU a 14-12 lead and a match-point serve. Grace Ferguson stole the serve with a kill and cut LCU's lead to 14-13. Froeschl claimed her fourth kill of the set to clinch the set and match for LCU, who hit .421 in the fifth set.
