How It Happened
Set One:
LCU was unsuccessful on their first seven attack attempts and found themselves trailing 6-1 out of the gate. They ended up with one kill on their first 13 attempts and trailed 9-2. LCU was unable to grab consecutive points until trailing 11-4, as they went on a 3-0 run to pull with four points (11-7) of the Mustangs. MSU built the lead back, using a trio of LCU attack errors to surge on an 8-2 run for a 21-11 lead. The deficit was too much to overcome, as LCU could only muster a 4-0 rally and fell 25-17. LCU had eight errors in the set and hit .000 in the set.
Hannah Froeschl led them in the set with three kills. Hannah Moore led MSU with four of their 13 kills in the opening frame.
Set Two:
After committing eight attack errors in the opening set, LCU limited their errors to two in the second set. Four different Lady Chaps helped spur a 6-0 run and LCU jumped out to an 11-3 advantage to open the set. LCU followed with a 6-1 run and led as much as 12 points (18-6).
Aaliyah Gray and
Sage Chain combined for a block to end a 3-0 MSU run and LCU won the set 25-13. The Lady Chaps hit .321 in the set, with
Kaitlyn Mayo leading the way with four kills.
Set Three:
The third set was the tightest played set, with the score tied on five occasions. With the score tied 6-6, a pair of blocks involving Sims and a pair of attack errors led to a 4-0 LCU run for a 0-6 advantage. Kelli Ell had a pair of kills for the Mustangs to ignite a 4-0 push, which put MSU within a point of LCU (15-14), but a combo block of Gray and
Sage Chain helped LCU respond with the next three points. LCU closed the set scoring 10 of the final 14 points to take the set 25-18.
Sage Post erupted in the set with five kills off seven attempts, as LCU hit .406 and had a match-high 14 kills during the frame.
Set Four:
The momentum continued for LCU in the final set, as they jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the set. Post had a pair of kills and joined Froeschl with a block to extend it to 17-7. MSU did answer with a 5-0 scoring rush, but Gray interrupted the Mustangs with a kill, which bucked the scoring trend and began a see-saw of alternating scoring until the match ended with a 25-17 LCU set win. Post had three kills in the set and Froeschl contributed three blocks and two kills. Stoker had five of her 14 kills tallied in the set for MSU.
