Lubbock Christian University improved to 2-0 in road games on the young campaign, as LCU used a season-high .309 attack percentage to top former NAIA rival Wayland Baptist 3-0 for their third consecutive straight-set win of the season. LCU's attack mark was supported by a combined 23 kills from
Hannah Froeschl (13 kills, .455 attack %) and
Sage Chain (10 kills, .529 attack %). LCU produced 51 kills in the three-set match, with 50 assists recorded (
Jalee Sims led LCU with 22 assists). Paxton Patterson led WBU with 12 kills, and Lucie Mahelova contributed a match-high 40 assists.
How It Happened
Set One:
LCU was able to separate from a 15-15 tie with a 6-0 run started by a kill from Froeschl and capped by an ace from Froeschl. The Lady Chaps led 22-16 and 24-21 before the Pioneers rallied to cut the LCU lead to 24-23. LCU, who had two of their last three points scored off WBU serving errors, finished the set with a kills from
Aaliyah Gray (it was her team-leading fifth of the set). Patterson led all players with six kills. Each team was geared up offensively, as LCU hit .344 in the set and WBU had a .367 attack mark.
Set Two:
The second set witnessed the score knotted up six times early in the set. LCU, trailing 5-4, received a pair of kills from Chain and took advantage of a trio of WBU attack errors to spark a 8-2 rally and LCU led 12-7.
Kendall Mahaney served a pair of aces and sparked a 7-1 run to expand the LCU lead to 19-9. Froeschl and Chain each had five kills and combined for 10 of LCU's 14 kills in the set to win the set 25-16. WBU hit .103 in the set.
Set Three:
Jenna Lyons opened the final set with consecutive kills for LCU, who jumped out to an 8-3 lead. Four LCU attack errors over a five-point stretch allowed WBU to come back and they cut LCU's lead to 9-8. Froeschl ended the run with a kill, which fueled a 3-0 run to lead 12-8. The Lady Chaps maintained their lead until WBU went a 4-1 run (Amber Daniel with two kills in the run) to cut the LCU lead to 22-21. LCU never relinquished the lead, closing the set on a 3-1 run for a 25-22 set win to claim the match. The Lady Chaps excelled in the set with 19 kills (from eight different players). Froeschl led LCU with five kills in the frame.
