Bakkali, Galietero Diez have big games as Chaps roll over Eastern New Mexico

LCU earns first win in Portales since 2018

PORTALES, N.M. – For the first time since 2018, the Lubbock Christian men's soccer team heads home from Portales, N.M. with a victory, knocking off the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds 3-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Eastern New Mexico (4-5-1, 1-3-0 LSC) came out hot, firing three shots to just two for Lubbock Christian (5-5-3, 2-1-1 LSC) in the first 30 minutes.

Tariq Bakkali broke the scoring open for the Chaps in the 38th minute, picking up a ball about 20 yards out from the net and firing it over the Greyhound goalkeeper to give LCU a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season.

Tis Sula and the Hounds tried to answer in the waning seconds of the opening stanza, but a Tom Miles save kept the contest a one-goal game at the break.

It did not take the Chaps long to extend their lead, as Heriberto Campuzano found Pablo Galietero Diez in front of the keeper, who scored his fifth goal of the season and picked up a goal for the second straight match, putting LCU ahead 2-0.

Sander Tønnessen laced the last shot on goal attempt for the match for Eastern New Mexico in the 64th minute, but Miles was there for the save.

With 1:05 left in the match, Bakkali helped add to the Chap tally, finding Enzo Jaques on a breakaway for his first career goal, icing the match and giving Lubbock Christian the 3-0 victory.

Bakkali picked up three points in the contest, the third time this season the London, England native has had a goal and an assist in a match. He has now tallied 55 total points in his LCU career, second most all-time. With a pair of shots on goal this evening, Bakkali now sits third all time with 43 career shots on target. Bakkali also ties Stewart MacDonell for second most matches played in program history, suiting up and seeing the pitch for 71 career matches.

Galietero Diez also moved up the career leader board with his big night. With three total shot attempts, Galietero Diez is now in sole possession of seventh place all time with 82 total shots. Two of those shots were on goal, moving him into fifth place all time with 38 shots on target for his career. Finally, Galietero Diez becomes the fifth Chap in program history to pick up at least 40 career points after scoring a goal tonight against the Greyhounds.

In his first season as a Chap, Tom Miles is already making a mark on the record books, recording his fourth shutout tonight. That is already the fifth most for any goalkeeper in LCU history.

Lubbock Christian returns to Hub City on Saturday, Oct. 15 to face UT Tyler. Kickoff from the LCU Soccer and Track Facility is set for 3:30 PM. Fans can purchase tickets ahead of time at lcuchaps.com.
