Highlights
Despite their highest total of solo blocks (8) since rally scoring began (2001), Lubbock Christian University was unable to split their four-match road trip, falling 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Texas A&M International in a Lone Star Conference match that some wild set-endings inside Kinesiology and Convocation Building. Teams combined for 23 blocks, with TAMIU producing 13 team blocks. Megan Menchaca led TAMIU with six blocks to go along with her match-high 21 kills. The Dustdevils combined for a trio of double-doubles, as Emma Lade (47 assists, 12 digs), Giulia Hortelan (17 digs, 12 kills) and Mackenzie Catalina (17 kills, 12 assists) each completed the task.
Kiana Fallaha led the offensive attack for LCU, leading the team with 17 kills.
Lily Bickley (11) and
Sage Chain (10) also had double figures in kills.
Kalli Dalland six blocks (four solo) and seven kills for LCU. The Lady Chaps also received a match-high 20 digs from
Kendall Mahaney and received a double-double from
Kayton Genenbacher (43 assists, 12 digs).
How It Happened
Set One:
LCU had to battle back from an 8-4 deficit, and they did so with a 7-1 run highlighted by consecutive aces served by
Chloe Menard (LCU had three during the run) for an 11-9 lead. The Lady Chaps trailed 13-12 until a kill by Menard began a 3-0 LCU run for a 15-13 lead. Five errors by the Dustdevils led to LCU going on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 20-16. The set closed on a 5-1 LCU run to claim the set 25-18. LCU had 12 kills in the set, but no player had at least three kills (five players had two kills). Menard had two aces in the set.
Set Two:
With the second set tied 5-5, TAMIU exploded with a 9-2 surge for a 14-7 TAMIU lead.
Sage Chain had a pair of kills to help LCU cut the deficit to 21-19 with a 4-0 run. TAMIU ended any thoughts of an LCU rally, as they won the set 25-20 with a 3-0 run. Menchaca led all players with six kills in the set. Fallaha led LCU with five kills and Dalland had a pair of solo kills in the frame.
Set Three:
Things were a little wild in the third set, as TAMIU let go of a 24-18 lead. LCU received kills from Genenbacher, Bickley and Chain and they rallied back with a 6-0 run to tie the set 24-24. It was all for not, as TAMIU scored the next two points to win the set 26-24. Earlier in the set, the score was tied 14-14, but TAMIU broke away with a 7-0 run to eventually have the 24-18 advantage. Bickley and TAMIU's Menchaca each had five kills in the set to lead their respective team. Dalland served a pair of aces during the set.
Set Four:
It looked promising LCU was going to force a fifth set. Tied 11-11, LCU sprinted to a 17-12 lead with a 6-1 run. LCU led 21-17 before a 4-0 TAMIU run tied the set 21-21. A kill by Bickley put LCU up 23-22, but TAMIU posted three consecutive points and won the set 25-23 to avoid a fifth set. LCU had 18 kills in the set with a monstrous nine kills coming from Fallaha. Catalina led TAMIU with seven kills in the frame.
