How It Happened
Set One:
The statistics in the opening set were more lopsided than the score, as Angelo State had a 17-9 advantage in kills. ASU won the set 25-20, as Sydney Mundkowsky and Cate Boldrick combined for 10 kills (each had five kills). LCU received seven points off attack errors and a pair off service errors in the set. LCU led 5-2 and 10-9 early, but the Belles responded from a timeout with 5-1 run for a 14-11 lead. A serving ace by
Aaliyah Gray had LCU trailing 14-13, but it would be as close as LCU would get, as ASU used a 7-2 run for breathing room to claim a 25-20 set win.
Set Two:
The Lady Chaps went crazy in the second set and turned the table on the Belles, with a 16-6 advantage in kills. LCU hit a whopping .625 in the set, while holding the Belles to a -.071 attack percentage. The tone was set early, as LCU, with kills from three different players, opened with a 7-0 lead. They also used a trio of 4-1 runs to cruise to a 25-10 set win. Bickley led LCU with five kills.
Set Three:
LCU wouldn't be able to keep the success from the second set going in the third set, as ASU never trailed in the frame. The Belles jumped out to a 7-4 lead and used a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 15-8. A pair of kills by
Kiana Fallaha led to a 3-0 LCU run to cut the deficit to 15-11, and a 5-1 run trimmed the deficit to 19-17 before ASU scored the next three points to relieve the pressure. ASU won the set 25-19. Mundkowsky led the way with six kills in the set for ASU, while LCU was led by four from Fallaha.
Set Four:
ASU attempted a furious comeback after LCU had leads of 22-16 and 24-20 cut to 24-23, after a 7-2 ASU run. LCU was able to hold off the comeback bid and force a fifth set after a kill by Fallaha clinched the set 25-23. A pair of kills by Gray and
Kalli Dalland helped LCU open the set with an 8-4 advantage. On four occasions, ASU rallied to cut the LCU lead to a one-point margin, but LCU (leading 16-15) responded with a 6-1 run for a 22-16 lead. Each team had five kills from their kill-leader in the set, as LCU received five kills from Gray and Kaila Garnett had the same for the Belles.
Set Five:
ASU scored the first three points of the final set and held a three-point margin until a 4-0 LCU run gave the Lady Chaps a 6-5 advantage. The teams were tied 7-7 until a Sam Rodgers kill sparked a 5-0 run for the Belles. LCU was unable to recover from the run and dropped the set 15-10. Mundkowsky was 5-for-5 in kill attempts in the set, as ASU hit .474 in the frame.
