CHAP NOTES
  • > Allie Schulte, who actively ranks second in NCAA Division II in career games played (147 games played in her career), leads the squad in scoring with an average of 12.3 points per game. She also leads the team is assists (80) and steals (76). Her 80 assists ranks sixth in the conference, with a pace of 3.3 per game (12th in the LSC), and her 76 steals is second in the nation (Ashley Steffeck of Colorado School of Mines has 89 to lead the nation). She has 47 steals in conference play (has her with 3.9 steals per conference game), with a career-high eight steals on Jan. 2 at Texas A&M International. The 76 steals also has her with 305 career steals, which is the second active leading mark in career steals in NCAA Division II (second highest mark in program history and 26 away from the program's all-time career mark). Last Thursday (against Midwestern State), Schulte became the 32nd active Division II player to reach 1,500 career points and became the first Lady Chap to hit the plateau since Tess Bruffey (2014-2018).
  • > Ashton Duncan leads LCU with 62 three-pointers, averaging 2.58 per game (fourth in the conference). The 62 three-pointers ranks 10th in the nation and leads the LSC (Morgan McMillen of Walsh leads the nation with 76). Duncan, who is 16 points shy of 1,000 career points, is second on the team averaging 11.0 points per game. She matched a program single-game record with 8 three-pointers on Jan. 22 against St. Mary's (second time in her career). She needs one three-point to reach 249 three-pointers, which would move her past Jordan Hampton (248 from 2005-09) and into second in program history, and she is 26 three-point attempts from having the top mark in LCU record books.  Duncan's 248 career three-pointers ranks 10th actively in NCAA Division II for career three-pointers.
  • > The Lady Chaps have claimed the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor in five of the 11 weeks the award has been issued. Juliana Robertson and Allie Schulte have received the honor twice, with teammate Grace Foster has also receiving the award. Overall for Offensive and Defensive, LCU has claimed six LSC honors issued this season (five defensive and one offensive). Robertson is coming off her second defensive honor,  as she averaged 9.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists last week. The Kerrville, Texas native had a 10-point performance against Oklahoma Christian, and then followed with 12 rebounds against Midwestern State and 10 rebounds versus Texas Woman's. She posted a career-high five steals against TWU, to go along with her 12 boards in the game. On the helping hand, Robertson led LCU in assists for the week, leading off the week with four assists against OC.
  • > Laynee Burr, who has three performances of at least 17 points this season, is averaging 8.8 points per game. A member of the DII CCA Tip-Off Classic at the Trailhead All-Tournament Team selection, Burr posted a record shooting performance from the free-throw line last Thursday (vs. MSU), as she set the Rip Griffin Center record going 12-of-12 from the free-throw line.
  • > Channing Cunyus is also averaging 8.8 points a contest this season. She recorded the third Lady Chap double-double of the season Jan. 22 at Angelo State, which was the first of her career. She posted a career-high 10 rebounds and added 10 points to complete the double-double. Three different Lady Chaps have a double-double this season, as Cunyus joined Juliana Robertson and Grace Foster. Cunyus followed the performance Jan. 24 in Odessa, Texas with six three-pointers and a career-high 24 points.
  • > LCU opened the season making their first 14 free-throw attempts and are 78.5% (274/349) from the free-throw line, which ranks 13th nationally. They topped that mark in their opening home stand of the season, making 43 consecutive free-throws (They made 28 straight free-throws in their game against Lander as part of the sequence). Schulte, who is 25-of-25 on the season from the line in the fourth quarter of games, is 59-of-66 (89.4%) from the free-throw line on the season, which is 14th nationally.

NATIONALLY KNOWN
The Lady Chaps claimed the No.1 spot in the WBCA's National Top-25 Preseason Poll for the first time in program history this year, and also for the first time they were the favorites in both the WBCA and D2SIDA preseason polls. LCU fell to CSU Pueblo in Lakewood, Colo., which ended their 39-game win streak and knocked them out of the No.1 spot. For three consecutive polls, LCU was not in the No.1 spot, but they worked their way back to the top spot in the WBCA poll. Their return to No.1 status lasted through two WBCA and one D2SIDA poll before their loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville resulted in them showing up at No.6 (WBCA) and No.7 (D2SIDA) in the following week's polls. They worked back up to No.2 (D2SIDA) and No.4 (WBCA), but fell to No.10 after falling at A&M-Commerce. They are currently No.13 in WBCA and No.10 in D2SIDA. Overall this season, LCU has been No.1 in three WBCA polls and two D2SIDA polls.

On Dec.14, both LCU women's and men's basketball programs were each No.1 in their respective polls, marking the first time in LCU history in which LCU's men's and women's basketball programs were each ranked No.1 at the same time.

SO ARE SOME OTHERS
On Jan. 13, LCU fell at No.6 Texas A&M-Commerce, which was their first loss of the season against a Top-25 nationally ranked opponent (it has been their only road game against a nationally ranked opponent this season). LCU went 6-0 against nationally ranked programs last season and 4-2 in 2019-20 against the nations ranked foes. This season, LCU is 3-1 against ranked opponents, as they have defeated No.11 Tampa (Nov. 7 in Billings, Mont.), No.1 Lander (Nov. 19 in Lubbock) and No.20 Daemen (Nov. 20 in Lubbock).

STARS IN THE CONFERENCE

She is also averaging 3.9 steals per conference contest. LCU is averaging 11.6 steals per conference game and have forced opponents into an average of 18.8 turnovers per game.

FIVE THINGS ABOUT WT
1 >
The Lady Buffs, like LCU, opened the season with an early-season tournament exempt from counting towards the maximum amount of regular season games a program can schedule, as they hosted the D2CCA Tipoff Classic. Through 23 games, the Lady Buffs are 14-9 overall this season (7-2 in LSC).
2 > Excluding a 92-37 exhibition loss at No.7 Baylor, WT has played five nationally ranked programs and they are 2-3 in those contests. The opening three were part of the Tipoff Classic, with the two victories coming at home (defeated No.16 Southwestern Oklahoma State and No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce).
3 > This season is the first season for Josh Prock to serve as the head coach of WT. He previously coached at Eastern New Mexico, where he led ENMU to three NCAA postseason appearances.
4 > WT ranks third nationally in rebounding, with a total of 1,006 rebounds, with an average of 43.7 per game (15th nationally).  They have two players averaging over 7.0 rebounds per game, as Karley Motschenbacher (7.9… seventh in the LSC) and Alivia Lewis (8.4… third in the LSC) lead the way for the Lady Buffs on the boards.
5 > The Lady Buffs are behind LCU in the LSC in turnovers per game, as they average 14.0 per game.

THE SERIES AGAINST WT
LCU and WT are separated by 110 miles, but the two teams have only met nine prior times (this season will mark the third season they will face each other multiple times). LCU has a 7-2 series advantage. The first ever meeting was on Nov. 16, 2001, with WT defeating LCU 90-53 in Canyon, Texas (LCU's 2001-02 season opener). Last season, LCU swept the two-game home-and-home conference series, with a 68-42 win in Lubbock (Feb. 25) and a 48-45 win in Canyon (Feb. 27). The two teams played earlier this season in a non-conference contest in Lubbock (Dec. 7, 2021), which LCU won 60-49. Of their nine prior meetings, three have been in postseason play.

PRIOR MEETING VS. WT
LUBBOCK, Texas (December 7, 2021) - Ashton Duncan poured in 20 points and Juliana Robertson notched No.2 Lubbock Christian University's first double-double performance of the season, which included a career-high 15 rebounds, as the Lady Chaparrals extended their NCAA Division II record home win streak to 94 games with a 60-49 win over West Texas A&M in a non-conference Rivalry on the Range matchup inside Rip Griffin Center Tuesday night.

Each team had hot shooting early, as the opening frame featured four lead changes and each team had the lead for at least four minutes. For the opening 7:30 of the game neither team missed more than two consecutive shots, as each team opened the game 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the field. LCU had a pair of 5-0 runs in the first quarter, but WT had a 7-0 run and 10 points in the quarter from Alivia Lewis, which helped guide the Lady Buffs to a 22-19 lead heading into the second quarter.

The hot shooting fizzled out in the second quarter. LCU was able to find a three-pointer from Laynee Burr as their only field goal over a seven-shot stretch, while WT opened the second quarter missing their first seven shot attempts and finishing the quarter 1-of-12 from the field. LCU used an 8-0 run and outscored WT 14-3 in the quarter for a 33-25 halftime lead. Duncan finished the quarter with five points to lead LCU with 10 points in the first half.

Duncan opened LCU's scoring in the second half with a three-pointer to spark a 5-0 run and provide the Lady Chaps a 38-27 lead 1:45 into the half. Allie Schulte connected on a three-pointer with 2:49 left in the quarter for a 44-32 LCU lead, but the trey did not put LCU into the driver's seat. Schulte's field goal was LCU's only successful basket over nine shot attempts over a span of 9:06. Meanwhile, WT hit field goals on three straight trips, capped by a three-pointer from Haylei Janssens, and they produced a 7-0 run over a 66-second span to cut LCU's lead to 44-39 with 1:27 in the third quarter. Maci Maddox ended the run with a pair of free-throws to give LCU a 46-39 lead through three quarters in the books.

LCU, who combined to shoot 31% (9/29) over the middle quarters, was able to get back into an offensive gear in the fourth quarter. They closed the game 6-of-8 from the field. Following an opening field goal by WT's Zamorye Roberts 45 seconds into the quarter to cut LCU's lead to 46-41, LCU went on an 8-0 run for their largest run of the game. The sequence spanned three minutes and built LCU's lead to 54-41 for their largest lead of the game. Duncan led LCU with five points in the quarter, as she scored five points in each quarter for her game-high 40 points.

Duncan was 4-of-5 inside the arc and 4-of-10 from three-point range, leading to her 20-point performance. Robertson was LCU's only other double-digit producer, finishing with 11 points. Along with her second career double-double performance and her career-high 15 rebounds, Robertson led LCU with two steals and two blocks. LCU finished the game 43.4% (23/53) from the field and held WT to a 35.3% (18/51) shooting night. The Lady Chaps had a 14-9 advantage in forced turnovers, leading to a 22-6 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers.

Despite being held to two points after her 10-point outburst in the opening quarter, Lewis led WT with 12 points. She also led the Lady Buffs with eight rebounds. WT, who fell to 6-6 on the season, also received quality play from Karley Motschenbacher, who had nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.
