LEADING OFF
The Lubbock Christian University baseball team has a chance to go win a series today against Oklahoma Christian. The Chaps started the series off on the right foot, winning 8-4 in Friday's opener and will now look to sweep a doubleheader Saturday to claim their first series win of the 2022 season.
STARTING PITCHER MATCHUP
Game One
LCU – After starting a lefty on Friday, two right-handers will go to the mound for the Chaps on Saturday, with
Ty Stephenson getting the start in game one. Stephenson was injured most of the 2021 season but made his return to the mound last week against UAFS. He allowed six hits in 4.0 innings in that matchup with two runs crossing the plate. The Ingram native struck out three and walked one. In his LCU career, he has a 4.50 ERA in 69.2 innings pitched.
OC – In game one of last week's doubleheader against St. Mary's, the Eagles sent Andrew Alonzo to the mound. A sophomore, Alonzo got the win with 4.1 innings pitched. He allowed three runs on just two hits along with three walks and three strikeouts. One of the hits he gave up against the Rattlers was a home run, but the opposing team hit just .143 against him overall.
Game Two
LCU –
Shandon Herrera will be the starter in game two for the Chaps after posting the best outing of any Chap starter on opening weekend. The righty twirled for six innings, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks in that time. He also struck out four and held the Lions to a .150 batting average. Herrera is in his fifth and final year at Lubbock Christian. He was mainly used as a reliever for the first three seasons, but moved into the starting role more last year. He has thrown more than 100 innings at the collegiate level.
OC – Ryan Hill was the starter in game two of OC's first doubleheader of the season and looks to get the ball again today. He was on the mound for just three innings against the Rattlers. Hill allowed only one run on one hit with three strikeouts in that time, but struggled with command, walking four batters. Last year, Hill was used mainly out of the bullpen and posted a 15.92 ERA in 13.0 innings pitched.
