LAWTON, Oklahoma (Feb. 12, 2022) –  Lubbock Christian University suffered just its second loss of the 2021-22 season on Saturday, falling 89-85 to Cameron in double overtime.
Â
The Chaps are now 22-2 overall and 10-2 in Lone Star Conference play, holding a one-game lead over Dallas Baptist.
Â
It took a near miraculous comeback just for the Chaps to even force overtime in the game, and they came close to pulling out the win, both in regulation and in overtime.
Â
With just over three minutes in the second half, Connor Slater hit a jumper to put the Aggies up by 11, which was their widest margin of the game.
Parker Hicks answered with a three-pointer, sparking a 14-2 Chaparral run that put them up by two with just 12 seconds left in the game. Slater answered though, getting into the paint and hitting a jumper to tie the game. He was also fouled by
Aaron Gonzales on the play and shot a free throw that could have won it, but missed to send the game to OT.
Â
Lubbock Christian led by two twice in the first overtime and trailed by as many as three, but advanced to the second overtime thanks to a pair of clutch free throws from Hicks. They pulled ahead in the second overtime as well, but Brock Schreiner hit the big shot with 24 seconds left, nailing a three-pointer and LCU missed its final two attempts to take the lead.
Â
The Chaps were out-shot from the field for just the third time all season, allowing 46.7 percent shooting from the Aggies while shooting just 42.3 percent themselves. Four Cameron players finished in double-figures, including two with 20 points. LCU was also out-rebounded 51-38, which was is their largest negative margin of the year.
Â
Early on though, it looked like Lubbock Christian was going to cruise to a fourth-straight victory. The Chaps got the first basket of the game and they were the hot-shooting team early on. By the 9:47 mark in the first half, there were leading by 12 points and they still led by 11 with 7:14 left in the half when
Cameron Copley hit a three-pointer.
Â
From that point until the end of the period though, Cameron out-scored Lubbock Christian 26-5 to build up a seven-point halftime lead.
Â
No strangers to trailing at halftime, LCU could never put together the kind of run they have in other games to pull past the Aggies. They finally strung together some baskets and stops in the game's final minutes to force overtime, but Cameron pulled out the win.
Â
TURNING POINT
Cameron's run to close out the first half turned an 11-point deficit into a seven-point lead that they would maintain for much of the second half. The game wasn't won, however, until Schreiner's with just 24 seconds left in the second overtime.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
LCU's 42.3 percent shooting was their second-lowest mark of the season and their lowest since Nov. 18, when they shot 41.8 percent in a win against West Texas A&M.
Â
NEXT UP
The Chaps will play just once this week, traveling to Portales, New Mexico for a matchup that does not count toward the Lone Star Conference standings.
