Chap Defense Stifles Mustangs

Hicks, Daniels Combine for 46 Points

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 3, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University held Midwestern State to its lowest point total of the season, winning 64-52 on Thursday inside the Rip Griffin Center.

The Chaparrals have now won 20 straight games to start the season and they are 8-0 in Lone Star Conference play. The Mustangs fall to 8-13 overall and are now 4-5 in league play.

MSU shot just 37.5 percent from the field overall, including a 2-17 showing from beyond the arc. Reigning LSC Player of the Week Jermane Carter was held to just six points on 3-12 shooting for the night.

A big night from Parker Hicks started early, as he won the tipoff himself and drilled a three-pointer on the Chaps' first possession, but it would be a while before LCU was in control of the game. MSU's only three-pointer of the first half came from Jamey Sanders at the 15:43 mark and put them up by one. The Mustangs would go on to stretch that lead all the way out to seven points with 9:45 left in the first half after a pair of three throws by Jalin Brown.

After those free throws though, the Chap defense held Midwestern State scoreless for the next 7:24 of game time, as LCU scored 13 straight points, nine of which came from Hicks. The Mustangs finally broke the cold streak with 2:06 left, but Zach Stepp scored five points and Lloyd Daniels hit a pair of free throws before the break to give LCU a seven-point lead at halftime.

Daniels and Hicks provided the bulk of the scoring for the Chaps in the win and nearly outscored the Mustangs just by themselves, combining for 46 total points. Hicks matched his season-high with 25 to lead all scorers on 9-of-15 shooting, including a 4-6 performance on three-pointers. Although Daniels only had four points at halftime, he ended the game with 21, shooting 6-8 in the second half for 17 points. Daniels was also the game leader in assists with seven, while Hicks pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

The Mustangs kept the game close for the first couple of minutes of the second half, but an Aaron Gonzales three with 17:40 to go sparked a quick 7-0 run by the Chaps that put them up by double-figures, where the lead would remain for the rest of the game.

One final Lubbock Christian run of eight points came with just over four minutes to play and put the Chaps ahead by 20, which was their widest lead of the night, and LCU's starters were subbed off for the calm final few minutes.

TURNING POINT
LCU's 13-0 first half run that started at the 9:20 mark turned a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead, and the Chaps never trailed again the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7 | Senior forward Zach Stepp played 30 minutes in the win, scoring eight points and pulling down a career-high seven rebounds
54.5 | The Chaps shot 54.5 percent from the field, including a scorching 65 percent in the second half
24 | Cameron Copley played 33 minutes, which was his most in a game since he suffered an injury on Nov. 18 against West Texas A&M and the Chaps were +24 during his time on the floor, which was the best mark of any player

NEXT UP
Saturday is homecoming at Lubbock Christian, and the Chaps will face a tough test with alumni in the building as they host Dallas Baptist at 4 p.m.
