Lady Chaps Closing Out Gulf Shores Trip With Pair of Sunday Contests

LCU Aims To Rebound From Tough Saturday Season-Opening Losses

GULF SHORES, Ala. (Feb 6, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University softball will be looking for things going their direction Sunday, after they felt they were unable to catch a break in a pair of season-opening losses. LCU closes out their stay at the Gulf Shores Invitational with a pair of games Sunday against programs out of the Gulf South Conference, facing Montevallo (11:15 a.m.) and West Georgia (1:30 p.m.) at Sportsplex.

Tourney Notes
  • LCU is 0-2 on the season and in this season's Gulf Shores Invitational. Their losses were a 5-4 walkoff loss to West Alabama and an 8-4 nine-inning (extra innings) loss to No.14 Auburn Montgomery.
  • The season-opening loss for LCU was their first (14-1) in program history.
  • Kamryn Gibbs leads LCU at the plate, hitting .600 (3-for-5).
  • Kasey Flores (2-for-5) has leads LCU with two doubles and two RBI.
  • LCU is hitting .364 with the bases empty, but are hitting .195 with runners on base. It has led to LCU stranding 23 runners through two games on the season (they have forced opponents into stranding 21 runners).
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 447-147.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Back to Bama
  • LCU is making a return trip to Alabama, as this season marks their third consecutive trip to southern Alabama. Their 2020 season opener in Gulf Shores, Ala. was their first return to Alabama since the 2012 NAIA Softball Championships.
  • The Lady Chaps appeared in three national championship tournaments in Gulf Shores (2011, 2012, 2013) and played the 2008-2010 national tournaments in Decatur, Ala.
  • LCU, who opened last season in Mobile, Ala., is 7-6 all-time in games played at Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
 
Looking at UM
  • The Falcons went 17-24 last season, finishing eighth in the GSC with a 12-18 conference mark. They are 1-1 this season, defeating Drury 8-5 and falling to Rollins College 4-3 Saturday. They play Palm Beach Atlantic Sunday morning before facing LCU.
  • UM has not opened their season in Gulf Shores since 2019. They were 3-1 in their appearance in 2019.
  • Montevallo is slated to finish seventh in the 13-team GSC Preseason Poll.
  • Taylor Robinson had seven total bases Saturday to open the season, as she had a home run, a triple and four RBI in the combined two games.
 
Looking at UWG
  • The Wolves went 25-16 last season, finishing fifth in the GSC with a 17-11 conference mark. They are 1-1 this season, defeating Spring Hill 3-1 before falling 7-1 to Saint Leo.  
  • UWG is making their first venture to Gulf Shores since 2019. UWG went 4-1 in tat season's trip to lower Alabama.
  • West Georgia is slated to finish fifth in the 13-team GSC Preseason Poll.
  • The Wolves out-hit their opponents 14-10 Saturday, with all 14 hits resulting in singles. Pitcher Kaley Dowdy posted nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings in the circle.
