Turning Point:
An inning-ending double play with the bases loaded (turned by LCU) brought an end to the top of the third inning and the Hilltoppers had the tying run left stranded.
How it Happened:
The Lady Chaps opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs.
Athena Muniz hit a sacrifice fly to score
Skylar Herrera, and
Kamryn Gibbs followed with a two-out RBI-single down the right field line.
SEU was without a hit until Lauren Hoyt and Katie Dillon led off the top of the third inning with back-to-back singles. An error by the Lady Chaps allowed the Hilltoppers to score their first run of the game in the inning. They loaded the bases, but former Lady Chap
Valerie Brant hit into an around-the-horn inning-ending double play and LCU held the lead 2-1.
Tiarra Delrosario hit a triple in the fifth inning and scored on
Kasey Flores' groundout to help LCU extend the lead. An error followed on
Tyla Lee's at-bat and LCU led 4-1. In the sixth inning, LCU put the game out of reach with a three-run inning.
Savannah Wysocki singled in a run before Delrosario plated the second run of the inning and set up
Brooke Makemson's sacrifice fly to go up 7-1.
The Hilltoppers pushed a run across in the seventh inning to close the game's scoring.
Inside the Numbers:
- Taylor Franco improved her mark in the circle to 19-3 on the season and garnered her 54th career victory. Franco had her 48th complete game of her career and 15th complete game of the season, as she held the Hilltoppers to two runs off four hits in 7.0 innings. She registered five strikeouts and became the second Lady Chaps pitcher all-time to reach 400 career strikeouts (team record is 613 held by Katera Eltsosie from 2013-2017). She forced SEU into 13 groundouts. First baseman Tiarra Delrosario completed five unassisted put-outs on ground balls.
- LCU produced nine stolen bases in the game, coming one shy of their season-high mark of 10 from Mar. 20 at UT Permian Basin.
