LUBBOCK, Texas (May 11, 2022) – Softball All-South Central Region honors were announced by Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), with
Taylor Franco receiving First Team (pitcher) honors in each of the association's All-Conference announcement. The D2CCA also recognized
Angela Donaldson (Second Team) and the NFCA recognized
Brooke Makemson (First Team) and
Kasey Flores (Second Team) with All-Region honors.
Franco, a senior with another season of eligibility, becomes the first Lady Chaps member all-time to become a two-time NFCA All-Region recipient and the second two-time D2CCA All-Region honoree, joining Katera Eltsosie (2016, 2017). The Monahans, Texas native is a member of the Top-50 Watch List for the Player & Pitcher of the Year by Schutt Sports and the NFCA, who claimed LSC Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors this season. She is 19-4 this season, which has her co-leading the Lone Star Conference and entering the week ranked tied for 27th nationally in victories. A two-time LSC Pitcher of the Week has a program career record in no-hitters (five) and a single-season record with four this season (including a no-hitter over No.1 UT Tyler Mar. 27). She became the 18
th pitcher in Division II history to complete at least four no-hitters in a single season and she is joined by Katie Burawski of Bridgeport as the only players this season in Division II to complete four no-hitters. Her no-hitters are part of eight shutouts this season (program has 12 and ranks 23
rd nationally), which has her with a program-record 22 in her LCU career (ranks eighth among active Division II pitchers). Franco ranks second in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (4.93, 39
th nationally) and is second in complete games (15), seventh in WHIP (1.05) and strikeouts (135) and 11th in ERA (2.30). Entering the NCAA regionals, Franco has 54 wins in her LCU career, which is third in program history and tied for 22
nd among active Division II players. She also ranks second all-time in program history in appearances (99, 33
rd among active Division II pitchers), complete games (49), pitching starts (81, 24
th among active Division II pitchers), innings pitched (493.0, 30
th among active Division II pitchers) and strikeouts (408, 35
th among active Division II pitchers) and tied for second in saves (7, 15
th among active Division II pitchers). Over her career, Franco has a 2.10 ERA (35
th among active Division II pitchers) and a pace of 5.79 strikeouts per seven innings (29
th among active Division II pitchers).
Donaldson receives her first All-Region (as designated player) honor of her career. The Seabrook, Texas native, who is in her third season as a Lady Chap, leads LCU hitting .457 on the season, which leads the LSC and ranks 17
th nationally. The First Team All-Conference selection ranks fifth in the LSC in on-base percentage (.500) and has racked up a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts.
Makemson claims her second All-Region honor, and adds to her two-time LSC All-Conference accolades and Golden Glove honor. The third-year Lady Chap is hitting .350 and has appeared in all 47 games this season. Makemson co-leads the LSC in sacrifice flies (5), and also ranks 12
th in RBI per game (.89) and has 10 home runs. From Frisco, Texas, Makemson is third on the squad in slugging percentage (.662) and has 12 multi-RBI games on the season.
Flores, a UTEP transfer in her first season with the Lady Chaps, is an All-Conference selection claiming All-Region honors for the first time in her career. The senior (one season remaining of eligibility) from El Paso, Texas has appeared in all 47 games this season and has 44 hits and hitting .326. She leads LCU in home runs with 17 (second in the LSC and eighth nationally). Flores sits 14
th actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 40 (the mark includes her UTEP totals). She has 53 RBI this season (fourth in the LSC), with a team-leading 25 produced with two outs.
LCU receiving two D2CCA selections marks a program single-season high, and the three NFCA selections matches a program single-season record from last season.
The Lady Chaparrals are currently in Tyler, Texas preparing for the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. LCU begins the four-team double elimination postseason tournament Thursday as the No.4-seed and face No.5-seed No.7 Angelo State at 3 p.m. at Suddenlink Field.
