Former Lubbock Christian High School Head Coach Named Hitting Coach

LUBBOCK, TEXAS (July 14, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University baseball head coach Nathan Blackwood has named Brandon Walker the program's hitting coach. Walker takes over for Hector Limon, who announced his retirement from coaching after three seasons on the Chaparrals coaching staff.

"We are excited to announce Brandon Walker as our new hitting coach," said Blackwood. "Coach Walker will bring excellent energy and expertise as he comes in with previous experience as both a head coach at the high school level and as an assistant coach at both the collegiate and high school levels. Over the past four years, I've had the opportunity to observe Coach Walker very closely and have been impressed with his passion for the game and his ability to teach and motivate young men as they develop in the game of baseball. His playing experience under Chad Reynolds at Frenship, and collegiately under LCU alum Steve Coleman at Hardin-Simmons, who are two men that are very well respected by our program, will also prove to be valuable as he returns to coach at the collegiate level."

Walker is a Lubbock, Texas native that was a product of Frenship High School prior to playing at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas from 2013-2016.

A career .298 hitter at HSU, Walker claimed All-Conference First Team honors in 2014 after hitting .344 with a conference-leading 40 RBI. After completing a degree in Exercise Sports Science, Walker served as an assistant coach at Lubbock High School. Walker hit the collegiate coaching ranks in 2018, serving as an assistant coach at Trinidad State (Colo.). The Trojans completed a 47-12 season and held a No.10 NJCAA national ranking during Walker's time there. He most previously served as the head coach at Lubbock Christian High School the prior four seasons. The Eagles completed a trio of playoff appearances (2020 season did not have a postseason due to COVID), including a trip to the TAPPS State Tournament in 2019 (Eagles were state semifinalist). Walker claimed District Coach of the Year accolades in 2019.

Limon joined the Chaparrals coaching staff prior to the 2020 season after a storied high school coaching career dating back to his first head coaching appointment in 1995 at Levelland High School.

The LCU Hall of Honor member (inducted in 1998 individually and in 2013 as part of the 1983 NAIA National Championship Team induction) helped LCU improve their team batting from .241 (in his first season) to .301 in 2020 and .332 this season. LCU, which led the Lone Star Conference in home runs in 2021 (72) and ranked second in the LSC last season (74), also progressed their win totals over the three-season span from 7 to 23 to 34.

"Coach Limon will be tremendously missed," said Blackwood, as he reflected on Limon's tenure on the LCU coaching staff. "What he accomplished on the field in a relatively short time with the hitters was remarkable, but more importantly, his dedication to excellence, his loyalty and his friendship on a daily basis will be missed the most. Coach Limon is a great man of character, and we can't thank him enough for his servant attitude as he returned to work for his alma mater."
