Galitero-Diez records hat trick as Chaps rout Grizzlies in season opener

Four different Chaps score in mauling of Adams State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Pablo Galietero Diez recorded a hat trick and an assist as the Lubbock Christian men's soccer team steamrolled Adams State 6-1 to begin the 2022 season.

The scoring spread began in earnest, as Jordan Jayapurum found Galietero-Diez in front of the box in the 18th minute to give the Chaps (1-0) the 1-0 lead.

After just missing on some close chances, LCU's returning leading goal scorer from last season Tariq Bakkali corralled a pass from Eduardo Forte in the 34th minute, rifling a shot past the Adams State (0-1) keeper to push the lead to 2-0.

Just one minute later, it was déjà vu for the Chaps, as Jayapurum and Galietero Diez connected once again, giving LCU the 3-0 lead before the halftime break.

After a handball in the box by the Grizzlies, Galietero Diez completed the hat trick in the 50th minute on a penalty kick, swelling the Chap advantage to 4-0.

Ten minutes later, Hugo Staunton scored his first goal for the Chaps as freshman Lucas Carli found his teammate with a laser pass in front of the net. Staunton connected with the ball on a one-timer to increase the LCU lead to 5-0.

In the 71st minute, Carli found himself on the receiving end of a touch pass by Galietero Diez and then used a nifty spin move in the box, connecting with just enough of the ball to score the six goal of the match for LCU.

Adams State avoided the shutout and scored their first goal against the Chaps in seven years in the 73rd minute, as a penalty kick by Aidyn Ogle laced the back of the net, but that's all the Grizzlies could muster. LCU took the win 6-1 to give Collin Cone his first win as the head coach of the Chaps.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Galietero Diez's hat trick is the first for a Chap since Corey Hutchinson did so on Oct. 14, 2017, against St. Mary's. He is also the first Chap since Luciano Rodriguez to record at least five points in match. Rodriguez did so against West Texas A&M on Nov. 12, 2021, tallying exactly five points. Galietero Diez recorded seven total points (three goals, one assist)
  • Jayapurum becomes the first Chap since Ivan Muanze-Bengono to record two assists in a match. Muanze-Bengono tallied two assists on Nov. 9, 2021, against Texas Permian Basin.
  • The six goals tie the mark for most goals in a season opening match for LCU men's soccer. The Chaps defeated the University of the Southwest 6-1 on Sept. 5, 2013, to kick off the season.
