Running Chaps open season at Texas Tech Open

Chaps kick off season at first of two meets to be held at home course

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian cross country squads open the 2022 season at home, competing at the Texas Tech Open on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The women will compete in a 6K race, while the men will compete in the 8K. The first race begins at 8:15 AM at Chaparral Ridge. 

The Lady Chaps will look to improve upon last season, as Lubbock Christian finished the 2021 season placing 15th at the NCAA South Central Regional on their home Chaparral Ridge course. Leading the way for the Lady Chaps was Lubbock native and Cooper H.S. graduate Sky Sena, who came in as LCU's top finisher for the first time all season. Sena completed the course with a time of 23:12.5, placing 81st individually.

Junior Madelyn Merrell was selected as a runner for watch for the Lady Chaps. The Idalou, Texas native recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 5K last season, beginning at the NMJC Invitational, finishing with a time of 20:37.7. The next week, Merrell set a new personal best in the event and another third-place finish, recording a time of 19:36.0 at the D-II Preview. In the 6.275K at the ACU Naimadu Classic, she finished the race with a time of 24:41.7. Merrell closed out the season with a new personal best in the 6K at the NCAA South Central Regional, finishing with a time of 23:16.1.
 
Chloe Trull was also named a runner to watch by the LSC. The junior out of Ropesville, Texas et a new personal best in the 5K in her first race of the season, finishing with a time of 20:34.0 at the Texas Tech Open. In her first career 6.275K at the ACU Naimadu Classic, Trull finished with a time of 25:33.9. At the NCAA South Central Regional, Trull closed the season setting a new personal best in the 6K with a mark of 23:29.1.

Six other Lady Chap runners return to Hub City this season.

Last year, Ayse Allison opened her first season at Lubbock Christian with an 18th place finish in the 5K at the Texas Tech Open with a time of 19:44.33. In her first time running a 6.257K, Allison finished with a time of 24:30.4 at the ACU Naimadu Classic. The next week, Allison finished sixth at the D-II Preview in the 5K with a time of 19:59.7. Allison closed her 2021 season setting a new personal best in the 6K with a time of 23:15.5 at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional 

Hailey Davis set a new personal best in the 5K at the D-II Preview, finishing a career-high 22nd with a time of 22:00.5. In her first-ever 6.275K, Davis finished with a time of 27:56.2 at the ACU Naimadu Classic. She closed the season running her first career 6K at the Lone Star Conference Championships, finishing with a time of 27:04.7.

In the 2021 season, Hailey Lowery set a new personal best in the 5K at the D-II Preview, finishing 13th with a time of 21:01.8. A week prior, Lowery had recorded her first career top-20 finish, finishing 16th at the NMJC Invitational with a time of 21:39.7. In her first career 6.275K, Lowery finished with a time of 26:36.6 at the ACU Naimadu Classic. Lowery closed out the 2021 season with a new personal best in the 6K at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional with a time of 25:22.4
Sydney Orozco opened the 2021 season hot, setting a new personal best in the 5K at the Texas Tech Open with a time of 21:26.9. The next week, Orozco recorded a time of 26:26.8 in the 6.275K at the ACU Naimadu Classic. She finished a season-high 20th place in the 5K at the D-II Preview with a time of 21:38.3.

Sena had the best season of her career last year, setting a new personal best in the 5K at the D-II Preview, finishing seventh with a time of 20.04.6. In the 6.275K at the ACU Naimadu Classic, Sena recorded a time of 25:16.7. She closed the season setting a new personal best in the 6K with a time of 23:12.5 at the NCAA South Central Regional. 

Finally, Sheyla Vilca looks to compete more for LCU this season. Vilca ran just one race for the Lady Chaps, finishing 27th in the 5K at the D-II Preview with a time of 22:27.5
Sarah Blount, Kylie Knapp, Adrianna Langat and Amy Tew will make their debut for the Lady Chaps this season.

On the men's side, the Chaps were predicted to finish tenth in the Lone Star Conference this season. The selection is two spots higher than LCU finished at the 2021 Lone Star Conference Championships, with the Chaparrals finishing 12th with 258 total points in the 8K championship run last season.

Noah Villarreal, who led Lubbock Christian at three of their four regular season meets in 2021, did so again at the league championships. He placed 22nd with a time of 26:41.20, which was his second-best time in the 8K for the year.

Carlos Barraza was named a runner to watch for the Chaps. The Lubbock native opened the 2021 cross country season setting a new personal best  in the four-mile run at the Texas Tech Open, recording a time of 21:55.7. He then set a new personal best the next week in the 8K at the ACU Naimadu Classic, finishing 14th with a time of 26:22.0. Barraza recorded two more top-15 finishes for the Chaps, finishing 11th in the 8K at the NMJC Invitational and then finishing in a career-best third place at the 2021 Division-II Preview with a time of 26:46.61 in the 8K. Barraza closed out his cross country season with a new personal best in the 10K at the 2021 South Central Regional with a time of 34:06.8.

Tristan Young was also named an LSC runner to watch for the Chaps. The Gilbert, Ariz. native opened the 2021 season setting a personal best in the four-mile run with a time of 22:40.9 at the Texas Tech Open. He closed the season with a new personal best in the 10K with a time of 35:19.8 at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional.

Six more runners will also return for the men's cross country team this season.

Nathan Goble opened up his career at LCU in 2021 with a personal best in the four-mile run at the TTU Open, finishing with a time of 24:53.2. His mark of 29:54.42 in the 8K at the NMJC Invitational is his personal best in the event at Lubbock Christian. Goble set a personal best in the 10K at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional with a time of 37:54.3.
 
In his first season at LCU, Hagen Sage ran the 10K and the four-mile run for the first time, finishing with a time of 22:28.2 in the four-mile at the Texas Tech Open, and with a time of 35:24.2 in the 10K at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional. His time of 27:45.3 at the D-II Preview event in te 8K is his personal best, and his highest career finish, finishing 14th.
 
Last season, Colby Sandoval ran his first career four-mile run at the Texas Tech Open, finishing with a time of 22:51.8. He set a personal best time in the 8K at the D-II Preview, finishing 11th with a time of 27:26.3. Sandoval ended the season at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional, recording a time of 36:17.6 in the 10K. 

Like most of the Chaps, Villarreal ran the four-mile run for the first time in his career at the Texas Tech Open, finishing with a time of 21:10.3. He set a new personal best in the 8K at the NMJC Invitational, finishing sixth with a time of 25:54.8. The next week, Villarreal would finish ninth overall at the D-II Preview in the 8K with a time of 27:19.1. He ended the season at the 2021 NCAA South Central Regional, finishing with a new personal best in the 10K with a time of 33:03.8

Riley Webb set his personal best in the 8K at the NMJC Invitational, finishing with a time of 31:35.9. He recorded his career best 42nd finish at the D-II Preview in the 8K with a time of 32:19.8.

Fernando Villalon also returns to Hub City, but he did not compete during the 2021 cross country season.

Angel Avendano, Joshua Huang, Peyton Lafiette, Dalton Yeoman and Aiden Zingone are all newcomers to LCU for the 2022 cross country season.
