DENVER, Colo. – A brace by
Tariq Bakkali along with scores from Jordan Jayupuram and
Luke Suarez pushed Lubbock Christian to a 4-0 shutout of South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Bakkali wasted little time getting the Chaps (2-1-1) on the scoreboard, as
Pablo Galietero Diez found the senior in the box for an early goal in the second minute to put LCU ahead 1-0.
Just 96 seconds later, Bakkali deflected a ball outside the box to Jayapuram, who ripped an absolute laser over the head of Hardrocker (1-2-1) keeper Daniel Freitas to swell the Chap bulge to 2-0 in the third minute.
Later in the first half, Galietero Diez and Bakkali connected again in the 25
th minute, with Bakkali scoring his third goal of the season and second of the match to push Lubbock Christian up 3-0.
The match was very physical between both teams, with three combined yellow cards in the first half and culminating in SD Mines player Jeff Wacker being sent off with a red card in the 45
th minute. The Hardrockers would have to play the entire second half down a man.
LCU continued to pepper the Hardrockers in the second half, ending with Suarez scoring his first goal of the season in the 84
th minute to give the Chaps a 4-0 lead.
SD Mines recorded their only shot of the second half in the 90
th minute, the lone shot on goal of the match for the Rockers.
Connor Pettigrew saved the shot from Hayden Jaramillo to earn his first shutout as a Chap.
Bakkali's five points are a new career-high for him. He had previously tallied four points in a match four times in his career. It is also Bakkali's first brace since Nov. 9, 2021, when he scored two goals against Texas Permian Basin.
It is also the first time the Chaps have scored a goal within the first two minutes of a match since Abdou Joof scored a goal in the second minute against UT Tyler on Oct. 25, 2019. Coincidentally, Bakkali recorded an assist on that goal against the Patriots.
With seven shots in the match, Bakkali passes
Fernando Flores for fourth most in program history with 97. He also recorded four shots on goal against SD Mines, moving up to fifth most in program history with 38 for his career.
It is the second time this season that the Chaps have recorded at least 20 shots in a match with 24. LCU tallied 21 earlier this season against Adams State. Lubbock Christian had 20 shots in just one match last season, peppering 22 shots against UT Tyler in a 4-0 win over the Patriots.
The Chaps will continue their trek through Colorado, traveling to Colorado Springs to face the UC Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is set for 6 PM.
