Highlights
It was a day of ups and downs for the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals, as they opened the day with a straight-set morning loss and followed with a gritty five-set win over Colo. Colorado Springs (UCCS), who entered the contest 3-0 on the weekend in Lubbock. The games were part of the six-team Chap Classic inside Rip Griffin Center. Sage Chain led LCU in the opening game, producing eight kills and adding a pair of aces and blocks. Adams State had a trio of players in double-figures in kills, as Anna Huggins and Riley Rabedeaux each had 12 kills and Natalie Gallegos had 10 kills.

In their last match of the weekend, LCU had 18.5-point performances by Kiana Fallaha (18 kills, 1 block) and Sage Chain (14 kills, 8 blocks) and a whopping 63 assists from Kayton Genenbacher in their first five-set decision of the season. LCU also received 14 kills from Aaliyah Gray and 13 kills from Lily Bickley, as they hit .282 as a team. Kendall Mahaney led LCU in digs (20) and had one reception error on 22 serve receptions. They overcame some solid UCCS performances, as Raegen Emery walloped 23 kills and added three blocks for a 24.5-point outing. Hannah Ammerman provided 15 kills and Lauryn Shockey contributed 10 kills in three sets played.

Match 1

How It Happened

Set One:
The Grizzlies jumped on top early, as Shae Sapiga produced an ace on the opening serve of the game and sparked a 5-0 run. They led 7-1 and kept their distance, with an LCU 5-2 run cutting the deficit to its slimmest at 24-20, but the Grizzlies won the set 25-20. LCU's Sage Chain and ASU's Cindy Garcia each led their respective team in kills with four.

Set Two:
Chain served consecutive aces early for a 6-3 advantage, but ASU was able to bounce back with a 4-1 run to tie the set 7-7. The score was tied on 10 occasions in the frame, and as late as 20-20 before ASU responded from a Kayton Genenbacher ace with a 6-1 run to claim the set 25-20. Hailey Cournoyer led LCU in the set with four kills and a block. Riley Rabedeaux (6) and Anna Huggins (5) combined for 11 kills for the Grizzlies.

Set Three:
Cournoyer and Lily Bickley combined for a block to help LCU open a 6-3 advantage, but ASU called a timeout and responded with a 6-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. Fueled by a trio of LCU attack errors, a 501 Grizzlies run put LCU behind14-9 and forced head coach Keith Giboney into calling a timeout. A pair of kills by Bickley out of the timeout helped LCU creep the deficit to 17-14, but a 5-0 ASU surge took the wind out of the Lady Chaps sails. Payton Murray led LCU in the set with four kills, while Natalie Gallegos posted six kills to lead ASU in the set.

Inside the Numbers:

3 The loss ended LCU's three-game win streak and it was their first home loss of the season. It was LCU's first home loss in a non-conference match since Sept. 14, 2019 against Dixie State (now Utah Tech). The last time LCU lost in straight sets at home was Feb. 24, 2021 against West Texas A&M.
.102 LCU's attack percentage of .102 was a season low and the third-lowest dating back to the start of last season.
6 Freshman Payton Murray produced six kills for a new career high, topping her prior high of five against Alaska Anchorage.
11.5 Sage Chain led LCU with 11.5 points and finished with eight kills one block. She contributed a career-high mark in serving aces in the match (2).
4-1 Adams State defeated LCU for the first time ever, as the teams were meeting for fifth time all-time and the first time since the 2015 season.

Match 2

How It Happened

Set One:
Reilly Babcock opened the match with an ace and it sparked a 5-1 run to start the set. Lily Bickley notched a kill to end the rhythm and LCU was able to pull within two points (6-4). Zoe Parker served an ace, which tied the set at 11-11, and it was part of a 3-0 run that led to a trio of lead changes in the set. Sage Chain and Aaliyah Gray each had a pair of kills to combine for a 7-1 LCU run for a 20-16 lead.UCCS cut the LCU lead to 20-18 before a pair of combo blocks from Sage Chain and Beckley helped LCU close the set on a 5-0 run for a 25-18 set win. Beckley finished with four kills and two blocks in the set.

Set Two:
In a set in which the score was knotted up seven times, the lead never was more than a three-point lead for either team until a 7-3 scoring advantage by UCCS put them up 16-12. An ace by Kayton Genenbacher helped LCU climb back to 19-18, but leading 21-20, the Mountain Lions closed the set with a 4-1 run. Sage Chain had five kills and two blocks in the set, while UCCS improved from a .111 attack percentage in the opening set to a .316 mark in the second set.

Set Three:
If the score tied on seven occasions was not enough (from the second set), the third set would have 12 occurrences of a tied score. Neither team had more than a two-point lead in the frame. Tied 22-22, Aaliyah Gray produced a kill for a 23-22 lead. She followed serving an ace to setup set-point (leading 24-22), but Lauryn Shockley had a kill for UCCS to cut the LCU lead to 24-23. On the ensuing rally, a UCCS player injured herself and committed a net violation resulting in a replay challenge and a point awarded to LCU for the set win (25-23). Kiana Fallaha led LCU with four kills and a block in the set. LCU won the set despite UCCS having a 17-15 advantage in kills (UCCS also had a 20-13 advantage in digs). Raegen Emery was responsible for eight of the 17 UCCS kills in the set.

Set Four:
Like the third set, there were 12 times the score was tied in the set. A Joei Barela ace put UCCS up 8-4 before LCU answered with a 6-2 run, spurred by a pair of kills from Aaliyah Gray, to tie the set at 10-10. The score would be tied as late as 22-22 before UCCS closed out the set with four of the last five points to win the set 25-23 and force a decisive fifth set. The teams combined for 31 kills in the frame (16 by LCU). Fallaha (6) and Gray (4) combined for 10 kills in the set.

Set Five:
LCU showed no signs of momentum loss having to play a fifth set. They opened the final set on a 4-0 run and jumped out leading as much as 8-2 after a kill by Gray. UCCS cut their deficit to three points, but wouldn't get any closer, as LCU closed the match on a 5-1 run to win the set 15-8 and claim the match. Fallaha led LCU in the final set with three kills. LCU hit .533 in the set.
