LUBBOCK, Texas - The Chaparrals set four new school records, as LCU closed out competition on day two of the Corky Classic at Texas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Joy Egwu set two new school records, the first being in the 60-meter run. The Midland native finished 34th out of 65 competitors in the event with a time of 7.91 seconds. That time beats out
Charlotte Scannell's mark of 8.27 seconds set at the 2022 Rumble in the Jungle by 0.36 seconds. Egwu is the first Lady Chap to ever finish the 60-meter run in under eight seconds.
Egwu, along with
Jozlyn Arana,
Kiley Cummings and
Anna Salisbury set a new school record in the 4x400 meter run. The quartet finished 16th out of 26 teams with a time of 4:01.15. That time beats the old school record set in 2021 of 4:06.72 by over five seconds. The team beat out other teams from Texas State, Tarleton State, West Texas A&M and Angelo State.
For the second straight day,
Bryce Spencer set a new school record, this time in the shot put. The senior finished with a toss of 14.32 meters, beating the old record set by Larry Cone in 1977 of 14.03 meters by 0.29 meters. Spencer finished 16th out of 26th throwers, above competitors from Texas Tech, Texas State, Tarleton State, Incarnate Word, Angelo State and West Texas A&M.
In his first collegiate 60-meter race,
Nathaniel Luna just beat the school record in the event by 0.01 seconds, finishing 29th out of 96 runners with a time of 6.94 seconds. Luna's time beats the former record set by
Keitron Boyd at the 2022 Rumble in the Jungle. The time is also just 0.08 seconds away from being an NCAA provisional mark.
Coulter Reel finished 31st in the 60-meter hurdles, but by finishing the race, she becomes the first Lady Chap to record a mark in the event in the program's NCAA history. The Lady Chaps began indoor track & field in 2017.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team of
Chris Rader,
Ryan Gordon,
Keitron Boyd and
George Garcia finished ninth in the event with a time of 3:17.24. That mark is an NCAA provisional time, and is the 13th fastest time in all of Division-II. It is also just five seconds away from tying the school record set back in 1972.
Kevin Washington picked up his third straight top-10 finish in indoor triple jump, finishing seventh with a mark of 14.42 meters. Counting the outdoor season, Washington has finished inside the top-10 in the triple jump at 12 straight meets.
Landon Bowers just missed out on the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in his first time running the event as a Chap, finishing 18th with a time of 8.50 seconds. Bowers missed on the finals by 0.05 seconds, and beat out 21 other competitors.
In his first collegiate meet,
Dustin Bryant recorded a top-20 finish in the long jump, finishing 19th with a distance of 6.34 meters.
Madelyn Merrell picked up a top-15 finish in the mile, finishing 14th with a time of 5:24.34.
Julia Nelson competed in the mile for the first time in her college career, finishing with a time of 6:03.91, while her teammate
Kylie Knapp finished with a time of 6:27.73.
Angel Avendano also competed in the mile for the first time in his college career, finishing with a time of 4:54.39.
In her first time running the 60-meter run in college,
Kamille Boyd finished 49th out of 65 other racers with a time of 8.08 seconds. On the men's side,
Thomas McCully finished his first college 60-meter with a time of 7.36 seconds.
Keitron Boyd picked up a top-15 finish in the 200-meter run, finishing 13th with a time of 21.81 seconds, beating out a runner from UTEP.
Sydney Jones, Michelle Sime, Reel and
Sheyla Vilca all ran the 4x400 meter run together as a group for the first time, finishing with a time of 4:12.19, beating out the second team from Tarleton State. The men's B team of
Luke Mosley,
Jorge Ronquillo,
Riley Webb and Bowers finished with a time of 3:37.52.
The Chaps will head out of state for the first time this season, heading to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Dr. Martin Luther King Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21. The event begins at 10 AM central time from the Albuquerque Convention Center. Live video and result links are available at lcuchaps.com
