LUBBOCK, Texas (November 17, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University and Southwestern Oklahoma State each traded 9-0 runs in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Chaps were able to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard the final 3:40 of the game to claim a 61-54 win in their opening game of the Food King Classic Friday night inside Rip Griffin Center.
The Lady Chaps (4-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Maci Maddox, who had 15 points and two steals. Audrey Robertson added 14 points and six assists, and Shaylee Stovall and Grace Foster each helped out with 10 points. Foster was a rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with nine boards.
Lubbock Christian shared the ball well in Friday's game, racking up 15 assists on 22 made field goals. Robertson's six assists led the Lady Chaps.
Lubbock Christian's defense held Southwestern Oklahoma State to only 38.2 percent shooting from the field, while going 22-of-44 (50%) on their offensive end. The Bulldogs did get a double-double from Hailey Grant, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 5-4 advantage, Lubbock Christian, who never trailed, went on a 7-0 run with 8:03 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 12-4. The Lady Chaps received seven points in the quarter from Robertson to send the Lady Chaps to the quarter break with a 25-16 advantage. Lubbock Christian capitalized on six Southwestern Oklahoma State turnovers in the period, turning them into 11 points on the other end of the floor.
The Lady Chaps maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 36-28 edge. Lubbock Christian dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint in the quarter to finish the half with an 18-10 scoring advantage in the paint.
Lubbock Christian closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Grace Foster, to expand its lead further to 50-40 with 47 seconds to go in the third. Twice, SWOSU cut the LCU lead to a possession (three-point game), but each time Shaylee Stovall drained a three-pointer. The second of which sparked a 9-0 run, which was capped by a layup from Maddox in the fourth quarter.
Martie McCoy had a three-point play 2:20 into the fourth quarter to provide LCU their largest lead (55-41), but he Bulldogs battled back. SWOSU went on a 9-0 run to cut LCU's lead to 57-52, but they were unable to get any closer, as LCU held SWOSU off the scoreboard the final 3:40 of the game.
