LUBBOCK, Texas (December 12, 2023) - Grace Foster posted half (21 points) of Lubbock Christian University's team point total Tuesday afternoon, and the 42 points the Lady Chaparrals garnered was enough to result in a new program record for the lowest point total in a win, as LCU claimed a 42-28 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville inside Rip Griffin Center.
Foster led the Lady Chaps (8-3, 3-1) with 21 points and eight rebounds. For a second consecutive game, Foster was LCU's lone player in double figures in scoring.
Lubbock Christian collected 35 rebounds in Tuesday's game compared to Texas A&M-Kingsville's 31, led by Foster's eight boards. The Lady Chaps also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into seven second-chance points (7-2 advantage in the category).
The Lubbock Christian defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the other end of the floor (22-8 scoring advantage). Reese Schumann and Shaylee Stovall co-led LCU with three steals each for the Lady Chaps.
How It Happened
Lubbock Christian started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Schumann, to take an early lead with 4:10 left in the first quarter. A score that would hold for the rest of the period, as LCU shutout the Javelinas in the opening frame. Lubbock Christian did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 10 points close to the basket (four points from Foster).
The Javelinas opened the second quarter making their first two field goal attempts to cut into the LCU lead before the Lady Chaps went on an eventual 8-0 run starting at the 4:02 mark in the second period. The run was highlighted by a bucket from Maci Maddox, to increase its lead their 22-11. The Lady Chaps took a 22-13 advantage into halftime behind five points in the frame from Foster, including a total of nine in the half.
Lubbock Christian continued to preserve its halftime lead (Javelinas did cut LCU's lead to 22-18) before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Foster, to expand its lead to 30-18 with 4:20 to go in the third quarter. LCU was scoreless the remainder of the quarter, but Lady Chaps still entered the fourth quarter with a 30-24 edge. Lubbock Christian took advantage of seven Texas A&M-Kingsville turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways. Foster led LCU with seven points in the quarter.

They kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 42-28 win. Lubbock Christian took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint. LCU, outscoring TAMUK 12-4 in the final quarter, had Foster lead the team again in the quarter, as she finished with five in the quarter (she posted 12 in the half).
Game Notes
» The Lady Chaps held the Javelinas to only 32.5 percent shooting from the field, but it was enough to top LCU shooting from the field (LCU moved to 2-1 when being out-shot), as LCU was 29.6% (16/54) from the field (54 attempts matched a season high). The 29.6% shooting was the worst shooting performance in a win since they defeated Eastern New Mexico 64-55 with a 28.9% shooting performance from the field on Dec. 30, 2017.
» The Lady Chaps never trailed after taking a 10-0 first quarter lead. The quarter shutout marked the third time in program history in which LCU held an opponent scoreless in a quarter. Women's basketball went to four quarters (from two halves) in the 2015-16 season. The last time LCU kept an opponent scoreless was ironically on Feb. 22, 2020 against TAMUK (the only prior time Texas A&M-Kingsville played in Lubbock… The Javelinas scored 29 points in that contest). That occurrence was during the third quarter. Tuesday, the Javelinas went the opening 10:23 of the game scoreless.
» Grace Foster, Audrey Robertson, and Maci Maddox combined to account for 79 percent of the Lady Chaps points.
» LCU and Texas A&M-Kingsville entered the contest the top two teams in the LSC in three-point shooting, but neither team held up to the statistic Tuesday. TAMUK was 20% from three-point land on 10 attempts, while LCU was 4-of-13 (30.8%).
» LCU's point total of 42 points was the lowest since scoring 42 in a loss at TAMUK on Dec. 31, 2021. The 42 points in a victory set a new program low for fewest points scored in a win.
» TAMUK's point total of 28 points was the fewest allowed by LCU since they limited Western New Mexico to 23 points on Feb. 11, 2021.
» Lubbock Christian cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game, which was a season high (Audrey Robertson led LCU with three).
» Grace Foster led the Lady Chaps with a game-high 21 points, which marked the second consecutive game and 19th time in her career in which she posted at least 20 points. Foster was 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The remainder of the team was a combined 9-of-40 (22.5%) from the field, 1-of-7 (14.3%) from long-range and 2-of-5 (40%) from the free-throw line.
» TAMUK did not have a free-throw attempt in a game, which marks an LCU single-game program record for not allowing a free-throw attempt. The opponent going scoreless from the free-throw line marked the first time it has happened since Newman was 0-of-3 from the line against LCU on Feb. 7, 2015.
» The Javelinas were led by Veyda Lake, who scored 12 points in the second half and finished with 16 points. She was 8-of-12 from the field (rest of the team combined to go 5-of-28, 17.9%).
» The win improved LCU to 4-2 at home this season and ended a streak of two consecutive LSC home losses (carried over from last season).
» The Lady Chaps improved to 4-1 all-time against TAMUK and all matchups have been with LCU former assistant coach Michael Madrid at the helm of the Javelinas. The game was TAMUK's second-ever visit to Lubbock, placing LCU with a 2-0 record in the all-time series in games played in Lubbock.
