LUBBOCK, Texas (December 30, 2023) – Lubbock Christian University had 11 fewer turnovers than Southwestern Assemblies of God, leading to a 72-63 win over the Lady Lions in exhibition play Saturday inside Rip Griffin Center.
The Lady Chaps had two players score in double figures, led by Maci Maddox, who had 13 points and two steals. Grace Foster tacked on 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Shaylee Stovall added eight points and three steals. Thirteen Lady Chaps hit the hardwood (all played at least 3:49) and 12 of them figured into the scoring.
Lubbock Christian out-rebounded SAGU 34-33 in Saturday's game, paced by Foster's eight boards. The Lady Chaps also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points (outscoring SAGU 6-5 in the category).
Lubbock Christian forced 22 SAGU turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Lady Chaps turned those takeaways into 17 points on the other end of the floor (outscored SAGU 17-8 in the category and 10-0 advantage in the first half). Stovall's three steals led the way for Lubbock Christian.
How It Happened
SAGU opened the game with a 5-0 run, but LCU countered with the next six points. After falling behind 7-6, Lubbock Christian went on an 8-0 run with 5:25 left in the first quarter, culminating with a bucket from Reese Schumann, to take a 14-7 lead. The Lady Chaps then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-9 advantage. Lubbock Christian capitalized on nine SAGU turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.
Lubbock Christian kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 9:17 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kennedy Chappell, to increase its lead to 26-11. The Lady Chaps proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 39-20 advantage heading into halftime. Lubbock Christian was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
Following intermission, Lubbock Christian continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-24 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from MacI Maddox, to expand its lead further to 50-24 with 7:07 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Chaps added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 63-35 edge. Lubbock Christian played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.
SAGU was 9-of-11 from the field in the final quarter, but LCU held on despite a SAGU 28-9 scoring advantage in the quarter. LCU was just 2-of-10 (20%) from the field in the quarter and did not scoring the final three minutes of the game. The Lady Lions were led by 13 points from Neeley Tilley-Bedick and 12 points from Rylee Lavender, with Lavender scoring all her points in the final quarter.
