Lady Chaps Continue Lubbock Sports College Invitational With Friday DH

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 10, 2023) – The Lubbock Sports College Invitational continues Friday with No.21 Lubbock Christian University playing a pair of games at Maner Park.

 LCU and ESU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series 1-0 against the Hornets.
  • The lone prior meeting was scheduled Feb. 2, 2018, with LCU claiming a 12-10 win at PlainsCapital Park (now Maner Park).
  • Morgan Dufour went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in the win. Amber Carlton notched the win in the circle, with a save issued to Taylor Hinojos.
 
LCU and ASU Series Snapshot
  • This contest will mark the first-ever meeting between LCU and Adams State.
  • The two programs are scheduled to play a second time Saturday (3 p.m.).
 
Tourney Takes
  • LCU has six games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (four games against Rocky Mountain Conference programs and one against a representatives of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and one against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate College).
  • The Lady Chaps opened their play Thursday with a 3-0 shutout win over Chadron State. LCU had seven stolen bases in the game and received a complete game two-hit shutout performance in the circle from Taylor Franco.

Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their ninth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their fourth season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 15 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is Texas A&M-Commerce made the move to NCAA Division I.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 5-1 this season and all six prior games have been played at home.
  • For the first time in program history, LCU dropped a home opener, but they have bounced back with five straight wins.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .406 as a team (eighth nationally), with six home runs (sixth nationally) and 43 RBI in five games. LCU averages 7.5 runs a contest (12th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.29 (29th nationally). Opponents are hitting .169 against LCU this season.
  • LCU leads the nation in doubles per game (3.3) and second in doubles with 20.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 2-0 this season with a 0.78 ERA in 9.0 innings pitched. She ranks 24th nationally averaging 9.3 strikeouts per seven innings.
  • Taylor Franco is 2-1 with a 0.33 ERA and a trio of complete games.
  • Freshman Riley Flores leads LCU at the plate with a .636 average, as she is 7-for-11 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
  • Kasey Flores co-leads the team in hits (8) and leads the team in home runs (3), RBI (8), total bases (19), slugging (1.1488 and OPS (1.807). Flores had a trio of multi-hit performances and multi-RBI performances last week. She also hit a home run in three separate contests and posted 3-RBI contests against Newman and Southwestern Oklahoma State.
  • Hope Banales has four doubles, which entered the week ranked tied for second nationally.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 13th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Thursday with a softball record of 491-158.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

Looking at ESU
  • The Hornets went 25-30 last season, finishing their season in the MIAA Tournament.
  • ESU is opening their season in Lubbock and doing so for a second time in their program history, as they opened the 2018 season in Lubbock.
  • Chadron is slated to finish 10th in the 14-team MIAA Preseason Poll.
  • The Hornets have six games scheduled in Lubbock before heading back to Emporia, Kan. to host the ESU Classic.
  • They open this season with a noon contest against Minot State prior to facing LCU.
 
Looking at ASU
  • The Grizzlies went 13-36 last season, going 8-30 in RMAC play to finish 11th in the conference.
  • ASU opened their season last week at the South-Central Region Crossover in Los Lunas, N.M., where they went 2-3. They are 1-2 against Lone Star Conference programs.
  • Adams State is projected to finish 11th in the 12-team RMAC Preseason Poll.
  • The Hornets have six games scheduled in Lubbock before jumping into RMAC play next week at Metropolitan State of Denver.
  • They open their Lubbock stay with a contest against UT Permian Basin prior to facing the Lady Chaps.
