Lady Chaps Head Into Saturday on Seven-Game Win Streak

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 11, 2023) – The Lubbock Sports College Invitational continues Saturday with No.21 Lubbock Christian University playing a pair of games against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents at Maner Park.

LCU and CSC Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over Chadron, Nebraska based Chadron State College, 6-0.
  • Five of the six meetings have been in Lubbock (the lone meeting not in Lubbock was in Oklahoma City).
  • Skylar Herrera is hitting a career mark of .308 in four games against CSC with one home run and six RBI over her LCU career.
  • LCU pitchers Taylor Franco and Maxine Valdez are each 1-0 all-time against Chadron State. Franco faced CSC Thursday and held the Eagles to two hits in a complete game (7.0 innings) shutout. Valdez is 1-0 with 1.50 ERA in her career against CSC, holding the Eagles to two hits in a 6-1 victory on Feb. 11, 2022.
  • Saturday's contest marks the second meeting between the two teams this season, as LCU topped the Eagles 3-0 on a brisk windy afternoon Thursday at Maner Park.

  • This contest will mark the second-ever meeting between LCU and Adams State and it comes in a 24-hour span. LCU defeated ASU 10-2 in five innings Friday afternoon behind a 3-for-3 performance from Kasey Flores.
  • Ashlinn Hamilton claimed the win in the circle Friday with her second complete game of the season and in the freshman's college career (in as many starts). She struck out six batters in the 5.0 innings.
 
Tourney Takes
  • LCU has six games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (four games against Rocky Mountain Conference programs and one against representatives of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and one against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate College).
  • The Lady Chaps are 3-0 through their first three games played of the Lubbock Sports College Invitational.
    • LCU is hitting .453 in the event (three games), with Berkeley Quinn leading LCU with six hits.
    • Kasey Flores is hitting .714 (5-for-7) with an .800 on-base percentage. She leads LCU with nine total bases.
    • LCU has 15 stolen bases in three games, with Quinn (6) and Herrera (4) combining for 10 of the swipes.
    • LCU has outscored opponents 22-2 and have a 34-8 advantage in hits.
    • The Lady Chaps pitchers have a 0.82 ERA, with opponents hitting .138 against them. LCU has 22 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched.
    • Taylor Franco (7.0 innings) and Maxine Valdez (5.0 innings) have not allowed a run on the week.
    • LCU is 11-for-15 (.733) getting the leadoff batter aboard this week. Quinn is 4-for-4 in the role.
    • Lady Chaps pitchers have held opponents to an 0-for-18 (.000) mark in two-out at-bats on the week.

Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their ninth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their fourth season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 15 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is Texas A&M-Commerce made the move to NCAA Division I.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 7-1 this season and all eight prior games have been played at home.
  • For the first time in program history, LCU dropped a home opener, but they have bounced back with seven straight wins.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .438 as a team (eighth nationally), with eight home runs (sixth nationally) and 59 RBI in five games. LCU averages 8.0 runs a contest (12th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.69 (29th nationally). Opponents are hitting .170 against LCU this season.
  • LCU leads the nation in doubles per game (3.3) and second in doubles with 26.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 3-0 this season with a 0.64 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched. She ranks 24th nationally averaging 9.5 strikeouts per seven innings.
  • Taylor Franco is 2-1 with a 0.43 ERA and a trio of complete games. She has a pace of 8.3 strikeouts per seven innings. Both Valdez and Franco are holding opponents to a .133 batting average.
  • Freshman Riley Flores leads LCU at the plate with a .583 average, as she is 7-for-12 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
  • Kasey Flores co-leads the team in hits (12, with Berkeley Quinn) and leads the team in home runs (3), RBI (11), total bases (25), slugging (1.190 and OPS at 1.869). Flores had a trio of multi-hit performances and multi-RBI performances last week. She has a trio of 3-RBI performances this season.
  • LCU has a 22-3 advantage this season in stolen bases. Quinn leads LCU with nine stolen bases and Skylar Herrera has seven thefts on the campaign.
  • The Lady Chaps have eight home runs this season and six different Lady Chaps have round-trippers this season.
  • Hope Banales has six doubles on the season (she entered the week ranked tied for second nationally). Eleven different Lady Chaps have hit at least one double this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 13th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 493-158.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

Looking at CSC
  • The Eagles went 11-37 last season, finishing with a 10-26 record in the RMAC.
  • CSC opened last season as well in Lubbock, going 0-5 at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational.
  • Chadron is slated to finish ninth in the 12-team RMAC Preseason Poll.
  • The Eagles are playing their first eight games of the season in Lubbock prior to jumping into RMAC play Feb. 18 at Colorado Christian. They play their first 16 games on the road before their first home game, which is Mar. 4.
  • They are 2-3 this season. Freshman pitcher Delaney Farnsworth is 2-1 in the circle for the Eagles. Her one loss was to LCU.
 
Looking at ASU
  • The Grizzlies went 13-36 last season, going 8-30 in RMAC play to finish 11th in the conference.
  • ASU opened their season last week at the South-Central Region Crossover in Los Lunas, N.M., where they went 2-3.
  • Adams State is projected to finish 11th in the 12-team RMAC Preseason Poll.
  • The Hornets have six games scheduled in Lubbock before jumping into RMAC play next week at Metropolitan State of Denver.
  • They are 2-5 overall on the season and 0-2 in Lubbock after losses Friday to UT Permian Basin (9-2) LCU (10-2 in five innings).
  • Belinda Vargas is hitting .471 for the Grizzlies.
  • The Grizzlies have 10 home runs on the season, with three by Mariah Madrid.
  • ASU pitchers have a staff ERA of 12.25, as opponents are hitting .384 against them this season.
