LCU and Minot State Wrapping Up Lubbock Sports College Invitational at Maner Park

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 12, 2023) – No.21 Lubbock Christian University completes their play in the Lubbock Sports College Invitational Sunday at noon with a single-game contest against Minot State at Maner Park.

LCU and MiSU Series Snapshot
  • LCU is 1-0 all-time against Minot State.
  • The lone prior meeting was Mar. 16, 2010 at the Tucson Invitational Games in Arizona. LCU, behind home runs from Priscilla FaGaines and Kim Frazier, defeated the Beavers 8-0 in six innings. Cory Enriquez also provided LCU with three RBI off a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, which included a triple. Jori Rodgers had the complete game shutout in the circle for LCU.
  • Both teams were NAIA programs during their prior meeting (2011 was Minot's last season to play a NAIA schedule).
 
Tourney Takes
  • LCU has six games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (four games against Rocky Mountain Conference programs and one against representatives of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and one against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate College).
  • The Lady Chaps are 5-0 through their first five games played of the Lubbock Sports College Invitational.
    • LCU is hitting .427 in the event (five games), with Berkeley Quinn leading LCU with eight hits (she is hitting .500).
    • Kasey Flores is hitting .462 (6-for-13) with an .563 on-base percentage. She leads LCU with 13 total bases.
    • Sydnee Bowlin is 5-for-5, participating in four of the games and making two starts.
    • Ally Oyanguren leads LCU with six RBI in the event.
    • Hope Banales leads LCU with three doubles and also has a home run to co-lead LCU with four extra-base hits.
    • LCU has 24 stolen bases in five games, with Quinn (7) and Skylar Herrera (6) combining for 13 of the swipes.
    • LCU has outscored opponents 39-3 and have a 50-10 advantage in hits.
    • The Lady Chaps pitchers have a 0.52 ERA, with opponents hitting .112 against them. LCU has 31 strikeouts in 27.0 innings pitched.
    • Taylor Franco (7.0 innings) and Maxine Valdez (10.0 innings) have not allowed a run on the week and have combined to allow three hits. Valdez recorded a no-hitter Saturday against Chadron State for the 24th in program history (her third).
    • LCU is 16-for-24 (.667) getting the leadoff batter aboard this week. Quinn is 6-for-7 in the role.
    • Lady Chaps pitchers have held opponents to a 1-for-27 (.037) mark in two-out at-bats on the week.
    • Of their last 20 innings played, LCU only has one inning in which they have not scored.

Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their ninth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their fourth season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 15 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is Texas A&M-Commerce made the move to NCAA Division I.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 9-1 this season and all 10 prior games have been played at home.
  • For the first time in program history, LCU dropped a home opener, but they have bounced back with nine straight wins.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .429 as a team (eighth nationally), with nine home runs (sixth nationally) and 73 RBI in five games. LCU averages 8.1 runs a contest (12th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.40 (29th nationally). Opponents are hitting .153 against LCU this season.
  • LCU leads the nation in doubles per game (2.9) and second in doubles with 29.
  • The Lady Chaps have batted in 50 innings this season. They have scored at least one run in 34 of them (68% of the innings).
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 4-0 this season with a 0.47 ERA in 19.0 innings pitched. She ranks 24th nationally averaging 8.8 strikeouts per seven innings. Saturday she notched LCU's 24th no-hitter in program history and the third of her career, as she blanked Chadron State.
  • Taylor Franco is 2-1 with a 0.43 ERA and a trio of complete games. She has a pace of 8.3 strikeouts per seven innings. Both Valdez and Franco are holding opponents to a .133 batting average.
  • New Mexico State transfer Hope Banales leads LCU at the plate, hitting .520 (13/25) with a team-leading seven doubles.
  • Kasey Flores ranks third on the team in hits (13) and leads the team in home runs (4), RBI (13), total bases (29), slugging (1.074 and OPS at 1.662).
  • LCU has a 31-4 advantage this season in stolen bases. Quinn leads LCU with 10 stolen bases and Skylar Herrera has nine thefts on the campaign.
  • The Lady Chaps have nine home runs this season and six different Lady Chaps have round-trippers this season.
  • Hope Banales has seven doubles on the season (she entered the week ranked tied for second nationally). Eleven different Lady Chaps have hit at least one double this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 13th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 495-158.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

  • The Beavers went 28-20 last season, finishing with a 9-15 conference record to finish 11th in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
  • MiSU is 1-3 in Lubbock on the week, which has them 5-3 overall on the season.
  • Minot State is slated to finish ninth in the 16-team MiSU Preseason Poll.
  • The Beavers are hitting .305 as a team, with Brooklyn Morrison leading the team hitting .421 with three doubles and a home run.
  • Pitchers Calley Olson (4.38 ERA) and Reegan Floyd (5.13 ERA) are each 2-1 in the circle this season for the Beavers.
