Lady Chaps Hosting Eagles To Continue Homestand

Chadron State Returns To Lubbock To Open The Season

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 8, 2023) – The Lubbock Sports College Invitational opens Thursday with No.21 Lubbock Christian University hosting Chadron State College with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Maner Park.

 LCU and CSC Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over Chadron, Nebraska based Chadron State College, 5-0.
  • Four of the five meetings have been in Lubbock (the lone meeting not in Lubbock was in Oklahoma City).
  • Skylar Herrera is hitting a career mark of .300 in three games against CSC with one home run and six RBI over her LCU career.
  • Maxine Valdez is the lone LCU pitcher with history against CSC and she is 1-0 with 1.50 ERA in her career against CSC. She held the Eagles to two hits in a 6-1 victory on Feb. 11, 2022.
 
Tourney Takes
  • LCU has six games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (four games against Rocky Mountain Conference programs and one against a representatives of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and one against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate College).
  • LCU's contest Thursday is their lone contest of the day. They will continue with two games on Friday and Saturday (each) and one game on Sunday.

Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their ninth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their fourth season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 15 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is Texas A&M-Commerce made the move to NCAA Division I.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 4-1 this season and all five prior games were played last weekend at home, as LCU hosted the Lubbock Sports College Classic.
  • For the first time in program history, LCU dropped a home opener, but they bounced back with four straight wins.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .430 as a team (eighth nationally), with six home runs (sixth nationally) and 40 RBI in five games. LCU averages 8.4 runs a contest (12th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.58 (29th nationally). Opponents are hitting .186 against LCU this season.
  • LCU leads the nation in doubles per game (3.6) and second in doubles with 18.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 2-0 this season with a 0.78 ERA in 9.0 innings pitched. She ranks 24th nationally averaging 9.3 strikeouts per seven innings.
  • Taylor Franco is 1-1 with a 0.50 ERA and a pair of complete games.
  • Freshman Riley Flores leads LCU at the plate with a .750 average, as she is 6-of-8 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
  • Kasey Flores leads the team in hits (7), home runs (3), RBI (8), total bases (16), slugging (1.143) and OPS (1.754). She also co-leads the team on the defensive side with six assists, two double-play involvements and a 1.000 fielding percentage. Flores had a trio of multi-hit performances and multi-RBI performances last week. She also hit a home run in three separate contests and posted 3-RBI contests against Newman and Southwestern Oklahoma State. Of Flores' seven hits on the week, six were with runners on base (6-for-11, .545) and five were with runners in scoring position (5-for-8, .625). Flores was 2-for-3 reaching base in a leadoff at-bat and was 2-for-2 getting runners home from third base with less than two outs. Flores ranks tied for ninth nationally with her nine home runs.
  • Hope Banales has four doubles, which is ranks tied for second nationally.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 13th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Thursday with a softball record of 490-158.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

Looking at CSC
  • The Eagles went 11-37 last season, finishing with a 10-26 record in the RMAC.
  • CSC opened last season as well in Lubbock, going 0-5 at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational.
  • Chadron is slated to finish ninth in the 12-team RMAC Preseason Poll.
  • The Eagles are playing their first eight games of the season in Lubbock prior to jumping into RMAC play Feb. 18 at Colorado Christian. They play their first 16 games on the road before their first home game, which is Mar. 4.
  • They are 1-1 on the season after splitting a doubleheader Wednesday in Lubbock against Eastern New Mexico.
