CANYON, Texas (April 25, 2023) – Throwers made headlines at the Buffalo Invitational over the weekend, as Lubbock Christian University's
Abigail Jones and
Bryce Spencer each broke program records in throwing events.
Jones broke school records in both the hammer and the discus events, and she broke her own records. Her prior record in the hammer throw was 44.0 meters (2023 Masked Rider Open) and she topped the mark with a mark of 45.54, which won the event. Jones topped her prior discus school record mark of 38.61 (at 2023 Masked Rider Open) with a discus throw of 41.61 meters, which finished third in the event. The LCU women's program also had
Paityn Green (36.52m, seventh place) and Jazmen Duran (25.57m, 12
th place) also completed personal bests in the event.
Spencer broke
Tres Rodriguez' school record in the discus (53.41m in 2022 Corky Classic), with a toss of 54.52 meters, which hit a NCAA Division II provisional mark and he finished second in the event. He also hit a provisional mark in the hammer throw with event-winning throw of 61.07 meters. The Chaps had several personal marks reached in the throwing events, as Garret Dixon finished fourth with a discus throw of 46.48 meters and seventh with a hammer throw of 40.95.
Thomas McCully had personal-best results in the discus (finished eighth with a throw of 37.73m) and the hammer throw (throw of 40.95m finished seventh). He finished second in the javelin with a throw of 48.24 meters.
The two programs also had success in additional field events.
Lauren Guthrie finished first in the pole vault with a clearance of 2.90 meters. On the men's side,
Nathan Karseno won the triple jump with a leap of 12.24 meters and
Kevin Washington had a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.97 meters.
In running events,
Sheyla Vilca won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.6.
Sydney Jones finished third in the same event with a time of 2:29.75. Personal records were set in long distance runs for LCU, as
Kylie Knapp finished fifth in the 1,500-meters with a time of 5:50.59 and
Amy Tew finished fourth in the 10,000-meters with a time of 44:55.25.
LCU had the top-five finishers in the 800-meter run, with
Luke Mosley winning with a time of 1:58.98.
Takunda Rutunga (third with a time of 2:06.63) and Kaleb Gaona (fifth with a time of 2:10.31) had personal best results in the race. LCU also ganged up on the 1,500-meters, as they had six of the top-seven times, led by a first place finish from
Hagen Sage (4:15.36). Gaona (third with a time of 4:29.44) and
Aiden Zingone (seventh with a time of 4:34.28) hit personal-best times in the event.
Both LCU programs compete this weekend at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout hosted by Texas Tech at Fuller Track & Field Complex.
