No.13 Texas Woman's Holds Off a Pair Of LCU Comeback Bids

LCU Fought Off 14-Point and 7-Point Deficits, But Was Unable to Take The Lead

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 27, 2024) – No.20 Lubbock Christian University overcame a 14-point deficit and battled back from a seven-point fourth quarter to tie the game at 60-60, but No.13 Texas Woman's closed the game on a 16-4 run to claim a 76-64 Lone Star Conference victory over the Lady Chaparrals Saturday inside Rip Griffin Center.

The Lady Chaps (14-5, 9-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Audrey Robertson, who had 13 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Maci Maddox tacked on 12 points and five assists and Shaylee Stovall helped out with 10 points. Defensively Kennedy Chappell had eight points, six rebounds and produced a game-high five steals.

TWU claimed their eighth consecutive victory, which is the longest active streak in the LSC. They moved to 18-3 overall and 12-1 in the LSC behind 20 points from Averee Kleinhans and 18 points and nine rebounds from Ashley Ingram. TWU shot 54.9% (28/51) from the field.

How it Happened

Lubbock Christian struggled out of the gate, as TWU jumped out to a 16-6 lead six minutes into the game. They made nine of their first 12 field goal attempts. TWU led LCU 25-14 at the end of the first quarter. Foster led LCU in the frame with five points.

An eventual turn of events took place in the second quarter with just-over two minutes remaining, as Ingram fouled Foster resulting in Foster leaving the game. LCU did have a spark off Foster's departure, as LCU closed the half on a 10-2 run to trail 41-37 at the half. Stovall produced all 10 of her points in the game during the second quarter, which included knocking down her only two three-point attempts taken during the quarter.

Texas Woman's continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 43-37 advantage before Lubbock Christian went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Chappell, to tie things up at 43-43 with 6:51 to go in the third. The Lady Chaps could not advance their rally further as the Pioneers took a 58-53 lead into the fourth quarter. Reese Schumann and Audrey Robertson factored into the third quarter scoring, as each co-led the squad with four points in the quarter.

TWU constructed a 60-53 advantage in the fourth quarter before Lubbock Christian went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Robertson's three, to even the score at 60-60 with 6:46 to go in the contest. The Lady Chaps could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Pioneers outscored them 16-4 the rest of the way (TWU was 5-of-7 from the field in the stretch) to hand Lubbock Christian the 76-64 loss. Lubbock Christian had six points in the quarter from Robertson, but while she was 2-of-4 from the field in the quarter, the rest of the squad was an unfortunate 2-of-11 from the field. LCU was 1-of-10 from the field after they tied the game at 60-60.

Game Notes

» The Lady Chaps shot well from three-point range, knocking down 7-of-17 long range attempts (41.2%). LCU has shot at least 40% from three-point range in seven consecutive games.

» Audrey Spurgin (9 points) and Kennedy Chappell (8 points) came off the bench to combine for 17 points for the Lady Chaps. Chappell also matched a career-high with six rebounds and set a career high with five steals. The five steals matches the single-game high by a Lady Chaps member this season (fourth time this season a Lady Chap has produced five steals).

» Audrey Robertson led the Lady Chaps with 13 points. The mark provided her 13th game of the season to post double figures in points. She has averaged 16.7 points per game over the last seven games.

» The game marked the second game this season in which LCU never had a lead.

» The Lady Chaps fell to 3-3 when trailing at the half and 0-5 when trailing after the third quarter.

» LCU fell to 0-4 this season against nationally ranked opponents. Of their five losses on the season, four have come against ranked programs and one was against an opponent receiving national votes.

» The loss dropped LCU to 6-4 at home this season (3-3 in LSC play). The loss marked the first time LCU had consecutive home losses in the same season since falling to Wayland Baptist (Nov. 30, 2009) and Oklahoma Baptist (Jan. 7, 2010) since the 2009-2010 season.

» The win for TWU was their first-ever win in Lubbock (1-3) and LCU's all-time record against TWU drops to 7-4.
