LUBBOCK, Texas (February 1, 2024) – Audrey Robertson led Lubbock Christian University with 23 points, posting 21 in the opening half of play, as the Lady Chaps rolled to a 73-53 West Division win over Midwestern State Thursday in Lone Star Conference play inside Rip Griffin Center.
The Lady Chaps (15-5, 10-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Audrey Robertson, who had 23 points and six rebounds. Shaylee Stovall added 15 points and Maci Maddox helped out with 11 points, six assists and two steals.
Lubbock Christian did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 12 assists while turning the ball over five times. Maddox's six assists paced the Lady Chaps. Lubbock Christian forced 13 Midwestern State turnovers while committing only five themselves in Thursday's game, which led to a 15-3 scoring advantage in points off turnovers. Taylor Thomas, Kennedy Chappell and Maddox co-led LCU with two steals each. Chappell also co-led LCU (with Reese Schumann) with seven rebounds.
MSU fell to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in LSC play. Zarria Carter had an impressive double-double in the loss, posting 32 points and 11 rebounds.
How it Happened
After jumping out to a 17-11 advantage, Lubbock Christian went on an 8-0 run with 3:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Robertson, to increase its lead to 25-11. The Lady Chaps then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 27-13 advantage. Lubbock Christian was led in the quarter by Robertson, who was 6-of-8 from the field and drained a pair of three-pointers for 14 points. LCU was 12-of-18 (66.7%) in the quarter from the field.
The Lady Chaps offense cooled off in the second quarter, as they were 4-of-16 (25%) from the field, but they still received seven points from Robertson and took a 39-26 lead into the break. LCU scored eight of its 12 points in the quarter close to the basket. Robertson was 9-of-14 from the field in the half for her 21 points.
Lubbock Christian wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Audrey Spurgin, to expand its lead further to 44-26 with 8:33 to go in the third quarter. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Mustangs had cut into that lead, but the Lady Chaps still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-43 edge behind eight points from Shaylee Stovall. Lubbock Christian scored 14 of its 20 points in the paint in the period.
LCU went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter, finished off by MacI Maddox's jumper, to grow the lead to 70-47 with 4:43 to go in the contest. Maddox and Stovall each had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, as Maddox finished with five points in the quarter. LCU had a 20-8 scoring advantage in the half in the paint.
