Strong Second Half Leads LCU Past Aggies

LCU Improves to 8-0 In West Division Play

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 3, 2024) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter and the received an 18-rebound performance from Reese Schumann, as they remained perfect in West Division play (8-0) with a 56-50 Lone Star Conference win over Cameron Saturday at Rip Griffin Center.
 
The Lady Chaps (16-5, 11-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Audrey Robertson, who had 20 points. Kennedy Chappell tacked on 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Reese Schumann added eight points, 18 rebounds and two blocks.
 
Lubbock Christian's defense held Cameron to only 9.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc (1/11). The Aggies did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed eight second chance points while Lubbock Christian cleared 26 defensive rebounds. LCU won the rebound battle 38-32.
 
Cameron (7-14, 5-10) received 25 points from Shamica Smith, who also added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Smith was the lone Aggie in double figures in scoring.
 
How it Happened
 
The Aggies had the upper hand in the opening quarter, holding LCU to 18.8% shooting from the field (3/16). LCU received four points in the quarter from Robertson, but trailed 11-8 after the opening 10 minutes.
 
The Lady Chaps continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 26-21 halftime deficit. Smith poured in 11 points in the quarter and 15 points in the half to put the Aggies on top. Chappell and Schumann each had four points in the quarter and Schumann led LCU at the break with six points.
 
Cameron continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 32-25 advantage before Lubbock Christian went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Schumann, to trim its deficit to 32-31 with 4:59 to go in the third. The Lady Chaps continued their rally (produced an 11-2 rally) and brought things level at 38-38 entering the fourth quarter. Lubbock Christian took advantage of three Cameron turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways (6-0 advantage in the quarter). Robertson led LCU with nine points in the quarter, with five scored from the free-throw line.
 
Lubbock Christian kept it close before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Robertson's layup, to seize a 49-42 lead with 4:58 to go in the contest. Robertson (7) and Chappell (6) combined for 13 points in the period. LCU outscored CU 35-24 in the second half behind 16 points in the half from Robertson.
 
Game Notes
 
» The Lady Chaps outscored Cameron 18-12 in the fourth quarter to break a 38-38 third quarter tie. LCU moved to 4-3 when trailing at the half and 3-0 when tied heading into the fourth quarter.

» Lubbock Christian had a great day defensively, holding Cameron to 9%from beyond the arc on 11 attempts. It is the second time this season in which LCU has held an opponent to one three-pointer, as they held King to a 1-of-13 shooting mark from outside on Nov. 18, 2023.

» Lubbock Christian had a 38-32 edge on the boards in the win. The +6 margin in rebounds is a season high.

» Audrey Robertson led the Lady Chaps with 20 points. Coming off a 23-point outing Thursday night, Robertson posted her fifth 20-point performance (or more) of the season.

» Lubbock Christian got a career-high 18 rebounds from Reese Schumann. Candace Clenney produced 19 boards against Science & Arts of Oklahoma on Feb. 23, 2006 (the university record is 20), and LCU has had a trio of 18-rebound performance since then (Schumann's 18 rebounds marking the third). Kennedy Chappell also had a career-high in rebounds with nine to go along with a career-high in scoring (12 points).
 
» The win improved LCU to 8-4 at home this season (5-3 in LSC play).
 
» The win marked LCU's ninth consecutive win in the all-time series against CU and they increased their all-time record to 11-9 against the Aggies. LCU is now 6-3 against CU in Lubbock all-time.
 
What's Next
An important week of West Division play awaits, as LCU heads to San Angelo, Texas Thursday to face Angelo State. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Junell Center.
