SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 8, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University's road win streak was halted at six and the Lady Chaparrals suffered their first West Division road loss of the season, falling 61-42 Angelo State Thursday in Lone Star Conference action inside Junell Center.
Audrey Robertson led the Lady Chaps (16-6, 11-4) with 13 points. Reese Schumann added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks from the bench and Kennedy Chappell chipped in as well with five points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Schumann pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Lubbock Christian, but LCU was held to four second-chance points off their 12 offensive board. They also had missed opportunities in the turnover department, as LCU had a 14-13 advantage in forced turnovers, but was outscored 17-5 in points-off-turnovers. Chappell's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Chaps.
The Rambelles (17-7, 11-4) had a pair of double-double performances in the win, as Madeline Stephens finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant had 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points. McGhee-Pleasant also had four blocks.
How it Happened
Lubbock Christian struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. LCU opened the game missing their first six shot attempts and finished 2-of-12 (16.7%) from the field in the quarter.
Angelo State kept adding to that lead, building a 21-7 advantage before Lubbock Christian went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Robertson, to narrow its deficit to 21-15. Angelo State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Chaps trailing 31-21 heading into halftime. Robertson, who had 10 points in the second quarter, had all 13 of her points in the first half off a 5-of-8 shooting performance.
Following halftime, Lubbock Christian kept the Rambelles from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Schumann, to trim its deficit to 34-30 with 5:12 to go in the third quarter. Angelo State countered with an 8-2 run quarter and stretched its lead to 42-32 heading into the fourth. Lubbock Christian played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint. Macy Maddox, who led LCU with five points in the quarter, had LCU's lone three-pointer of the frame.
Angelo State'8-2 run to close the third quarter turned into a 22-6 scoring surge to take a 56-36 lead with 2:29 remaining in the contest. Lubbock Christian went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 56-42 with 1:48 to go in the contest.
