WICHITA FALLS, Texas (October 13, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University's men's tennis team completed a competitive weekend at the MSU Invitational hosted by Midwestern State University. The Chaparrals competed in both singles and doubles play, showing resilience in round-robin matches against teams from Midwestern State (MSU), Cameron University (CU), and Tyler Junior College (TJC).
In singles action, LCU's
Mattia Ghedin shined in Group 1, winning two of his three matches. He defeated Martin Hlavacek (CU) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and capped off his weekend by rallying to beat Louis Boilevin (CU) 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) in a third-set tiebreak. In a battle against MSU's Duque, Ghedin lost in straight sets, though both sets ended in close tiebreaks, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
LCU's
Pablo Segura also had a standout performance, securing a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Tyler Junior College's Daniel Borisov in Group 1, after narrowly dropping a hard-fought match to Louis Boilevin (CU), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Segura also competed well against Juan David Duque (MSU), falling 6-4, 7-5 in another closely contested match.
In Group 2 singles,
Andres De Los Rios provided more success for LCU, collecting two wins. He edged Raphael Velente (CU) 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), and outlasted Alex Morris (TJC) 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). However, De Los Rios dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Filip Vacula (MSU).
Tristan Vigneron also delivered an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 win over Raphael Velente (CU) but dropped two close matches, including a narrow three-set loss to Doni Gashi (TJC), 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
In doubles play, LCU found considerable success, highlighted by
Mattia Ghedin and
Kelly Giese, who went undefeated in Group 1. The duo claimed wins over Rhys Edwards and Vicente Preto (CU), 7-6 (7-5), and Juan David Duque and Jose Marquez (MSU), 7-6 (9-7), before dispatching Philip Kamara and Filip Vacula (MSU), 6-2.

Pablo Segura also put together a strong showing, winning two of their three matches in Group 1. They bested Martin Hlavacek and Brendan Lock (CU), 6-1, and handled Philip Kamara and Filip Vacula (MSU), 6-3, but fell 6-3 to Daniel Borisov and Doni Gashi (TJC).
In Group 2, the pairing of
Alexandre Sulpicy and
Tristan Vigneron delivered solid results, winning two of their three matches. They triumphed over Alejandro Pardo Moro and Ouga Miyazaki (TJC), 6-2, and edged Rowan Olsen and Justin Van Amerongen (MSU) 7-6 (7-5), before falling 7-5 to Jacopo Cianfarini and Alex Morris (TJC).
Segura moved to 11-3 in singles play and his 11 wins leads the Chaps. He is also 8-4 in doubles play. The doubles team of Ghedin/Giese improved to 9-2 this season after their 3-0 showing at MSU. The tournament was LCU's final fall scheduled event.
