Like Old Times, LCU Sweeps Sul Ross

All 14 Active Lady Chaps Contribute as LCU Sweeps Sul Ross State In First Meeting Since 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 19, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University showcased depth across their roster as all 14 active Lady Chaparrals contributed to a dominant 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-18, 25-8) over Sul Ross State. This marked the first Lone Star Conference clash between the two programs and their first meeting since 1998.
 
The victory inside Rip Griffin Center, to close out LCU's four-match homestand (first homestand of the season), improved the Lady Chaps' record to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in LSC action. Sul Ross remains winless away from home (0-10) and they fall to 2-12 overall and 2-6 in their inaugural LSC season.
 
Bryleigh Schweer finished with nine kills on the day to co-lead the Lady Chaps attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .368. Lily Bickley joined Schweer with nine kills and also pitched in with five aces and a trio of blocks in the contest. The Lady Chaps got 10 digs from Leddy Rae Guinn along with five blocks from Schweer to lead them defensively.
 
Game Notes
» Lily Bickley had a match-high five aces in the win, which ties her season high and matches her career record. The mark ranks tied for the fourth-highest ace total in a three-set match since the current rally-scoring format began (2008) and the most by a Lady Chap in a three-set match since Chloe Menard served five aces on Oct. 2, 2021 at Cameron.  

» The only time Lubbock Christian trailed in the match was when Sul Ross opened the third set with a 1-0 lead. LCU responded with a 13-0 run.

» Bryleigh Schweer and Lily Bickley had a match-high nine kills for Lubbock Christian. Freshman Camryn Blair also registered eight kills, matching a career high.

» All 14 active Lady Chaps appeared in the match. Freshman Ashley Howland (one kill) and second-year Lady Chap Raylynn Adams (three assists) made their LCU debut, and Jaiedyn Rankin made her season debut.

» Lubbock Christian attackers were helped by a match-high 35 assists from Kayton Genenbacher.
 
» LCU posted an impressive .323 attack percentage in their 3-0 victory over Sul Ross State, marking the first time this season the Lady Chaparrals have hit at least .300 in consecutive matches.
 
» LCU improved to 4-0 this season at home.
 
» The two programs were meeting for a 52nd time all-time, but for the first time since the 1998 season. LCU improves to 41-11 all-time against SRSU and the win marked the 15th consecutive win for LCU in the series (eighth consecutive win in straight sets).
 
» SRSU was led by Angelli Sanchez, who had seven kills and a pair of blocks.
 
How It Happened
 
SET 1 | The Lady Chaps led throughout the opening set, as they won the set 25-15. Lubbock Christian opened up its biggest lead, 10 points, to finish off the set. Lubbock Christian also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set, with two served by Bickley, who also added a trio of kills in the frame.
 
SET 2 | Lubbock Christian continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-18 victory in set two. Lubbock Christian opened up as much as a 10-point lead at 15-5 before finishing off the set they never trailed. The Lubbock Christian offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Lubbock Christian's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Sul Ross State attacks in the stanza (Bickley had three blocks). Bickley and Payton Murray each had three kills in the set.
 
SET 3 | Lubbock Christian closed the match in a 3-0 sweep after winning the third set. The Lady Chaps grabbed control of the set early when the score was 2-1 and never looked back to win 25-8. Lubbock Christian, who used a 13-0 run for a 13-1 lead, led by as many as 18 points at 24-6 before closing out the stanza, totaling 16 kills while only committing two attack errors along the way (hit .467 in the set). The Lubbock Christian offense also got a boost from three aces from Bickley in the stanza. Schweer and Tatum Fleitman each co-led LCU with five kills in the set.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
LCU returns to the road and heads to Silver City, N.M. Wednesday to face Western N.M. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Central) at Drag's Court.
