Lady Chaps Eye Key Conference Win in Tough Road Test Against St. Mary’s

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 1, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University's final road trip of the regular season concludes this week with two Lone Star Conference matchups. The Lady Chaparrals visit San Antonio on Friday to face St. Mary's at 6 p.m. in Bill Greehey Arena, followed by their regular season road finale on Saturday in Austin against St. Edward's at 1 p.m. in the Recreation & Convocation Center.

LOOKING AT STMU
- St. Mary's holds a 16-12 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1980. LCU has won 10 of the last 16 meetings in the series, but the Rattlers have won three of the previous four meetings. The two teams met in San Antonio last season, with LCU claiming a 3-1 win on Oct. 7. The Lady Chaps are 5-3 all-time in San Antonio.
 
- StMU closed out the 2023 season with a 2-6 record in their final eight matches to finish 12-15 overall and 7-9 in LSC play (11th in standings). The finish had them preseason picked tied for ninth in the LSC heading into this season.

- Heading into Friday's matchup with Lubbock Christian, St. Mary's holds a 13-8 overall record and a 5-5 mark in Lone Star Conference play, positioning them in the middle of the conference standings. The Rattlers have excelled at home with an 8-4 record and stand at 2-4 on the road, while remaining undefeated (3-0) at neutral sites. St. Mary's hit a midseason stride with a six-game win streak that included dominant sweeps over Oklahoma Christian, Cameron, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, though recent results have been more mixed, with three losses in their last five matches, including a recent 3-0 loss to conference leader West Texas A&M.

- St. Mary's rank 25th nationally and 3rd in the Lone Star Conference at 12.78 per set. Additionally, they rank 40th nationally in digs per set (third in the conference), showcasing a balanced defense that supports their offense.

- Important to the success for St. Mary's is setter Cali Nims, who ranks 24th nationally and third in the Lone Star Conference with an impressive 10.62 assists per set, highlighting her essential role in coordinating plays and setting up scoring opportunities. Additionally, she is second in the conference and 27th nationally in total assists, with 828.
 
LADY CHAP NOTES
- Lubbock Christian enters Friday's match with an 11-9 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Lone Star Conference play, currently ranked sixth among LSC teams. LCU had faced challenges on the road, but winning three of their last five road matches has them 3-6 in road matches. They played their first 14 matches of the season away from home (includes seven neutral site matches…4-3), but have taken advantage of the limited home play, posting a 4-0 record on the home floor. Their four home matches is the fewest among all LSC programs, with several programs playing 11 games at home this season (StMU will be hosting LCU Friday for their 12th home match this season).

- LCU stands out in the attacks per set category, entering Friday averaging 37.5 attacks (per set), which ranks seventh in the Lone Star Conference and 53rd nationally. Kiana Fallaha and Lily Bickley are at the forefront, contributing significantly to this statistic. Fallaha ranks second in the conference with 11.0 attacks per set (23rd nationally) and has 581 total attacks (19th in the conference) despite missing six matches. Overall, LCU's total attacks amount to 2,850, which is seventh in the conference.

- This season marks LCU's fourth season under coach Keith Giboney. The Lady Chaps seventh head coach in program history has jumped into his 20th year of NCAA coaching. Giboney, who has four NCAA Tournament appearances and seven conference titles on his resume, surpassed 400 coaching victories in his first season with LCU and has a career coaching mark of 443-213. The Chaps head coach entered the season as the 29th best-active head coach in win percentage (.679) and as the 27th best-active head coach in victories (432). He has the third-highest win total of head coaches with less than 20 years of head coaching experience.

- Setter Kayton Genenbacher currently sits seventh all-time in LCU's career record books for assists with 2,910 (25th actively among NCAA Division II assist leaders). On Sept. 27 in Denton, Texas, she became the ninth Lady Chaps member in program history to reach 2,500 assists. Genenbacher ranks 15th nationally in assists per set with an average of 11.0 which places her second in the Lone Star Conference. She has amassed a total of 832 assists this season (leads LSC and is 26th nationally).
 
-The Lady Chaps have shown potential in several key statistical categories within the Lone Star Conference and at the national level. Notably, the team's digs per set average of 15.8 ranks eighth in the conference, highlighting a solid defensive effort, led by Leddy Rae Guinn (12th in LSC with 3.7 digs per set). On the offensive side, the team's kills per set average of 13.8 is third in the conference, with Lily Bickley (seventh in LSCin points per set, 3.79) and Kiana Fallaha (eighth in points per set, 3.78) leading the way in scoring (points). Payton Murray has also been on display with double-figure kill efforts in nine of the prior 11 matches and is averaging 3.53 kills per set over the 11-match span.
 
- LCU has made notable strides in conference play. Kayton Genenbacher has been a standout, averaging 12.0 assists per set (leads the LSC), contributing a total of 433 assists in 10 matches. Payton Murray supports the offense with 129 kills (sixth in LSC), with Lily Bickley (118, 13th in LSC) and Bryleigh Schweer (112, 11th in LSC) providing a balance attack (14.6 kills per set for LCU to ranking fourth in the LSC, and ranking fourth in hitting with a mark of .249). Schweer leads in hitting (.312) and Bickley leads in points per set (4.19, sixth in LSC). Defensively, Leddy Rae Guinn leads LCU with an average of 4.11 digs per set (19th in LSC).
 
- Lubbock Christian University's volleyball team has shown resilience on the road, despite a challenging 3-6 away record (3-2 in their last five road games). Key contributors include Payton Murray (102 kills, 3.19 per set) and Lily Bickley (101 kills, 3.06 per set and hitting .323), who lead the offense, and Kayton Genenbacher, with 369 assists (11.2 assists per set), ranking as a critical playmaker. Bryleigh Schweer and Kiana Fallaha have also been offensive standouts, posting 76 kills and 74 kills respectively. Defensively, Leddy Rae Guinn anchors the backline with 129 digs (3.91 per set), contributing to the team's solid average of 15.88 digs per set, slightly outpacing their opponents.
