FIVE THINGS ABOUT MSU
1 > Midwestern State now holds a 1-4 record following a 78-48 home loss to Oklahoma Baptist. Despite a game-high 19 points and 18 rebounds from Zarria Carter, the Mustangs were held to just 33.9% shooting from the field. Their lone win came in their home opener against Rogers State (65-53), but they've struggled on the road with losses to UC Colorado Springs (67-57) and Adams State (61-48).
2 > MSU takes the No.11 LSC Preseason Poll ranking after a 7-21 overall finish last season. They went 5-9 in the West Division and 7-15 in the Lone Star Conference overall (12
th in the LSC overall standings).
3 > Senior forward Zarria Carter is dominating for MSU, averaging 19.2 points (third in the LSC), 12.4 rebounds (leads LSC and sixth nationally), and 2.2 steals (fourth in LSC). She already has four double-doubles, including her 17th at MSU in the loss to OBU. Carter also leads the conference and ranks first nationally in offensive rebounds per game (7.0).
4 > Freshman Kerbie Cash recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Central Oklahoma. She is tied as MSU's second-leading scorer (7.4 PPG), as she was scoreless against OBU.
5 > The Mustangs have struggled offensively, ranking 14
th in the LSC in scoring (54.0 PPG) and 15
th in field goal percentage (29.9%). They also rank 15th in three-point shooting (18.3%) and total assists per game (8.8). However, MSU has been effective defensively, holding opponents to 63.4 points per game and forcing 18.6 turnovers per contest. They rank fifth in the conference in steals per game (10.6), showing their defensive tenacity despite offensive woes.
THE SERIES AGAINST MSU
The Mustangs command the all-time series with a 21-15 series record over LCU, which included 11 consecutive wins until LCU winning the prior eight meetings. Included in a series of eight straight LCU wins is a sweep of last season's pair of West Division contest, which involved a 68-61 overtime win in Wichita Falls, Texas (Jan. 6). Each school has conflicting all-time records for the history of the two programs, as there were some MSU forfeitures in the mix, which enters into the confusion. The Lady Chaps are 10-7 all-time in Lubbock against MSU. They have only met five times in Lubbock since 1994 (LCU has won all five, including the prior meeting in Lubbock, which was a 73-53 LCU win on Feb.1, 2024). Of the prior 36 all-time meetings, the two programs have only met 10 times since
Steve Gomez's tenure as head coach of the Lady Chaps (he is 9-1 against MSU).
