LUBBOCK, Texas (February 15, 2024) – Led by a 63.6% shooting performance from beyond the three-point arc, the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals beat Western New Mexico 59-45 Thursday in a Lone Star Conference West Division tilt inside Rip Griffin Center.
The Lady Chaps (17-7, 12-5) had two players score in double figures, as Audrey Robertson and Maci Maddox each had 12-point performances. Deeper into the numbers, Robertson also provided four assists, two steals and two blocks, while Maci Maddox added five assists and a steal. Kennedy Chappell added seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
Lubbock Christian utilized excellent ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 15 assists on 24 made field goals. Maddox's five assists led the distribution list for the Lady Chaps. Of the 24 field goals, seven were from outside, as LCU was 7-of-11 from deep, with Maddox knocking down both of her two three-point attempts.
The Lubbock Christian defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 17 Western New Mexico turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 15-11 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers. Robertson and Chappell each had two steals to lead the way individually for the Lady Chaps.
The Mustangs (8-14, 3-14) received 14 points from Jade Goynes, who was 6-of-11 from the field. Goynes was the lone Mustang with more than five points.
How it Happened
After falling behind 8-2, Lubbock Christian went on an 8-0 run with 5:50 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Maci Maddox, to take a 10-8 lead. The Lady Chaps then added five points to the lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-11 advantage. Lubbock Christian relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four three-point shots (4-of-4 in the frame) to account for 12 of its 18 points. Robertson led LCU with seven points in the quarter.
The offenses were for woeful in the second stanza, as the two teams combined for 15 points and shot 7-of-28 (25%) in the quarter (WNMU was held to 3-of-15 from the field). LCU had eight points in the quarter, all in the paint, and took a 26-18 lead into the halftime break.
Lubbock Christian continued to preserve its halftime lead, opening on a 7-2 run for a 33-20 with 4:18 to go in the third. They went the final 3:23 of the third quarter on an 11-3 scoring binge to enter the fourth quarter with a 44-24 edge. Lubbock Christian played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint. Maddox and Reese Schumann each had four points in the quarter for the Lady Chaps.
The Lady Chaps hit six field goals in the final quarter and half were from downtown. Maddox, who had one of the treys, led LCU with five points in the quarter and finished with nine points in the half. Chappell nailed a three-pointer for a 59-38 lead before WNMU closed the game's final three minutes on a 7-0 run.

» The Lady Chaps were sharp from long range, knocking down 7-of-11 three-point attempts. Six different Lady Chaps had three-point field goals, with Maddox marking the only Lady Chap to have more than one make (she was 2-of-2). LCU prior high this season was a 56.3% shooting mark from outside, which ironically was at Western New Mexico on Jan. 20.
» The Lady Chaps held the Mustangs to only 38 percent shooting from the field. They were also held to one three-point field goal. It is the third time this season LCU has held an opponent to a season-low one three-pointer.
» Lubbock Christian tallied 15 total assists in the game, assisting on 62.5% of their made field goals.
» Audrey Robertson and Maci Maddox led the Lady Chaps with 12 points apiece. Robertson's performance marked her seventh consecutive game in which she has led (or co-led) LCU in scoring. Robertson also matched a career high with two blocks.
» Lubbock Christian got a team-high eight rebounds from Reese Schumann.
» For a fourth time this season, LCU had at least 10 steals, as they had 10 against WNMU. Eight different Lady Chaps had at least one swipe and Chappell and Robertson co-led LCU with two.
