Chaps Split Double Header with UAFS Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University Baseball team split Saturday's double-header with Arkansas-Fort Smith, moving their overall record to 8-7.

GAME 1 | Lubbock Christian 4, Arkansas-Fort Smith 2

Sophomore Chris Rhoades (2-2) got the win for Lubbock Christian. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out five. Sophomore Coleson Abel also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

At the plate, the Chaparrals were paced by senior Carson Ogilvie, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Senior Nate Van Maanen compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Hayden Blair also chipped in for Lubbock Christian, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Chaparrals first put runs on the board in the third inning. Lubbock Christian scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Ogilvie.

The Chaparrals then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fifth inning after the Lions cut it to 3-2. Lubbock Christian scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Van Maanen, which brought the Chaparrals lead to 4-2. The score remained 4-2 for the rest of the game, as Lubbock Christian held on for the win. 45 59 29 7 4

GAME NOTES

  • Rhoades struck out five Lions hitters.
  • Lubbock Christian's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed three runs across.
  • Lubbock Christian grabbed the lead at 3-1 in the bottom half of the third and never lost that advantage.

  • Ogilvie led the Chaparrals at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
  • Arkansas-Fort Smith was led offensively by Michael Brinton, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles.

GAME 2 | Arkansas-Fort Smith 25, Lubbock Christian 6
An explosive offensive output was not enough for Lubbock Christian on Saturday. The Chaparrals tallied six runs, but could not hold the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions at bay, and were defeated 25-6.

Junior Ryan Markwardt (2-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Lubbock Christian.

Senior Hayden Blair led the way offensively for the Chaparrals, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Junior Shea Bowen provided a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Brevin McCool also contributed, going 2-for-4 for Lubbock Christian.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Chaparrals first put runs on the board in the second inning. LCU scratched across a run off freshman Riley Lowry when Blair tripled in senior Jaxson Edwards.

The Chaparrals deficit expanded to 13-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. The Lubbock Christian offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Bowen, which brought the score to 13-6 in favor of the Lions. The Chaparrals were unable to get any closer, as Arkansas-Fort Smith added 12 runs to their tally on the way to a 25-6 final.

  • Arkansas-Fort Smith was led offensively by Brandon Ulmer, who went 4-for-5 hitting for the cycle and racked up eight RBI. Ulmer broke the UAFS school record for RBIs in a game. 
  • Junior Torres led the Lions pitching staff, throwing one scoreless inning.
  • The Lions broke their school record for runs in a game.
