LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Andrew Duran was dominant on Sunday, fanning eight Arkansas-Fort Smith hitters over four innings of work to help propel the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals over the Lions 11-10.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Duran tossed four innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits and walking three for LCU.
In the batter's box, the Chaparrals were led by junior Shea Bowen, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Senior Jarred Gibson also helped out for Lubbock Christian, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Lubbock Christian scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from Gutierrez.
The Chaps then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Lions cut it to 3-2. Lubbock Christian brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Gibson's single, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Chaparrals.
Arkansas-Fort Smith narrowed LCU's lead to 5-3 before the Chaps stretched the advantage to 7-3 in the fourth inning. The Chaps added two to their tally on Bowen's two-run homer to left.
The Lions then tied up the game at seven before LCU came back to retake their advantage in the seventh inning. The Chaps scored two runs, scoring one on a solo home run from Gibson, bringing the score to 9-7 in favor of LCU.
Arkansas-Fort Smith got within 9-8 until the Chaps scored again in the eighth inning to stretch its lead to 11-8. LCU picked up two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of senior Chris Shull. Arkansas-Fort Smith put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth, but the Chaps still held on for the 11-10 win.
GAME NOTES
- LCU got three-hit games from three different hitters, as Bowen, Gutierrez, and Gibson all collected three knocks.
- The Chap's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed three runs across.
- LCU grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
