Van Maanen and Shull Shine in LCU's 9-7 Win Over UT Permian Basin

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Nate Van Maanen and senior Chris Shull each racked up two extra base hits to help lead the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals past the UT Permian Basin Falcons 9-7 on Thursday.

Senior Ayden Alger started on the mound for LCU  (5-0). The southpaw went five innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Sophomore Coleson Abel picked up the win on the mound for the Chaps, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing three hits, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Van Maanen's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-5 day, and included a double, a triple and two RBI. Shull made his contribution with two doubles, a walk and two RBI, part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Junior Rhett Clark also contributed for the Chaps, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and four RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Chaps first put runs on the board in the second inning. LCU plated two runs when Clark left the yard with Van Maanen aboard.

The Falcons broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Chaps got back on the scoreboard. LCU scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Clark, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Chaps.

UTPB came back to even the ballgame at five before LCU reclaimed a 7-5 advantage in the fourth inning. The Chaps added two runs off of UTPB pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double from Shull.

The Falcons then evened up the game at seven before LCU fought back to retake their advantage in the sixth inning. The Chaps recorded two runs off of UTPB pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Shull, bringing the LCU advantage to 9-7. The score remained 9-7 for the rest of the game, as the Chaps held on for the win.

GAME NOTES
» LCU's highest scoring inning was the third, when it pushed three runs across.
» The Chaps took the lead at 5-3 in the bottom half of the third and never lost that advantage.
» Five Chaps had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» LCU pitchers faced 41 Texas-Permian Basin hitters in the game, allowing 13 ground balls and six fly balls while striking out seven.
» The Chaps drew six walks from UTPB pitching.
» Clark led the Chaparrals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
» UTPB was led offensively by junior Clayton Coats, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
» Junior Archer Blumenschine led the Falcons pitching staff, throwing one scoreless inning.

UP NEXT
The Chaps and Falcons square off tomorrow in a double header. Games are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Hays Field.
