Chaps Suffer First Two Losses of 2024, Dropping Double Header to UTPB

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University Baseball team dropped both games of a double header against UT Permian Basin Friday. The losses were the first of the season for the Chaps, moving their overall record to 5-2. 

GAME 1 | UT Permian Basin 8, Lubbock Christian 5

Sophomore Chris Rhoades (1-1) got the ball to start for LCU (5-1) and took the loss. Junior Cadon Everett was a bright spot for the Chaps, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Chris Shull's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included a double, a triple, a walk and two RBI. Junior Frayner Chaves furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Nate Van Maanen also chipped in for the Chaps, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Lubbock Christian scored three runs, including one driven in on a home run by Chaves.

The Chaps lost the lead they built in the third, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 8-3. Lubbock Christian put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Shull, which tightened the Falcons lead to 8-5. The Chaparrals were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES
» The Chaps out-hit the Falcons at a 9-6 clip.
» LCU went 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position.
» LCU pitchers faced 34 UTPB hitters in the game, allowing 16 ground balls and two fly balls while striking out three.
» UTPB was led offensively by junior Clayton Coats, who went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.

GAME 2 | Texas-Permian Basin 12, Lubbock Christian 11

Junior Chris Brown (0-1) took the loss on the mound for LCU (5-2). Senior Logan Ellis was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing two hits, walking none and striking out two.

In the batter's box, the Chaparrals were paced by sophomore Jacob Gutierrez, who went 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI. Senior Carson Ogilvie furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI. Junior Brevin McCool also contributed for LCU, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaparrals were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Lubbock Christian scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of McCool.

The Chaps then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Falcons cut it to 3-2. Lubbock Christian plated two runs off of Texas-Permian Basin pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Ogilvie, which brought the Chaparrals lead to 5-2.

LCU held UTPB without a run before building their lead to 8-2 the following inning. The Chaparrals notched three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Gutierrez.

The Falcons fought back, closing the gap to 8-7 until Lubbock Christian added some insurance in the fifth. The Chaparrals scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Gutierrez, bringing the Lubbock Christian advantage to 9-7.

UTPB came back to tie the game at nine before the Chaparrals reclaimed an 11-9 advantage in the sixth inning. Lubbock Christian brought home a pair, with one run driven in by junior Shea Bowen's single. The Chaparrals were unable to hold the lead, as Texas-Permian Basin scored three times over the remaining one inning to grab the 12-11 win.
