Division I New Mexico State Edges Out Chaps In Exhibition

Aggies Overcome 3-0 Deficit in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (April 7, 2024) – No.33 Lubbock Christian University remained in Las Cruces Sunday, after defeating Western New Mexico there Saturday, and fell 4-3 in an exhibition dual against NCAA Division I New Mexico State at N.M. State Tennis Center.

LCU had the opening lead of the dual after claiming the doubles point. Martins Abamu / Sabri Laphitz claimed a 6-2 win in No.1-doubles, but the Aggies won No.3-doubles to put the pressure on the No.2-doubles match featuring LCU's team of Herman Aguirre / Pablo Segura. The doubles match was tied 5-5, before Aguirre / Segura prevailed 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Chaps.

They made it 3-0 in the opening singles match, as Mattia Ghedin claimed a win in the first singles match completed (No.3-singles) and Blas Ruiz Romero followed with a win in No.5-singles. The Aggies stormed back with wins in No.2-singles, No.6-singles and No.4-singles to tie the dual 3-3, with the No.1-singles match remaining. The remaining match was claimed by the Aggies in three sets.

The match was an exhibition dual, so team and individual records for LCU will not be countable and will not impact rankings. The Chaps return home Thursday and host UT Tyler with an 11 a.m. open-serve at Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
